NEW YORK (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles star Donovan McNabb says black quarterbacks face greater scrutiny than their white counterparts.
In an interview on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" to be broadcast Tuesday, McNabb said black quarterbacks "have to do a little bit extra" because there are relatively few of them, adding "people didn't want us to play this position."
McNabb said if he passes for 300 yards and his team wins by a touchdown, critics will say, "Oh, he could have made this throw here. We would have scored more points if he would have done this."
Asked if white quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer are held to the same standards, McNabb replied: "Let me start by saying, I love those guys. But they don't get criticized as much as we do. They don't."
McNabb is one of six black starting quarterbacks in the NFL. The others are David Garrard of Jacksonville, Vince Young of Tennessee, Steve McNair of Baltimore, Jason Campbell of Washington and Tarvaris Jackson of Minnesota.
McNabb, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is 9½ months removed from major knee surgery and has missed 13 games the past two seasons because of injuries. On Monday night, he misfired on several throws and couldn't create big plays during the Eagles' 20-12 loss to Washington.
In 2003, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh, briefly part of ESPN's pre-game show, said he didn't think McNabb was as good as perceived.
"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL," Limbaugh said. "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well."
He resigned from the show the next week.

LOL, most of those other QB's mentioned suck, thus the critisism. Duh!!! McNabb is scrutinized (IMO) because he does well, but only once made it to the big game and then coughed up his cookies. I'd laugh at any QB who did that, black or white.
Those poor black QB's
Compares himslf to Peyton and Carson.
He should go ask a white guy in the NBA how they handle the pressure of being a minority

<< <i>....black quarterbacks face greater scrutiny than their white counterparts.

Or kill dogs
oh sorry, thats just the running backs and wide receivers!
Bottom line - the Eagles have lost 6 of the last 7 games when McNabb was the starter.
I find that very hard to believe, but if anyone can find examples where that's happened, then, sure, I'd have to agree with him. Maybe the Philly talk shows are that tough on him even after a big performance and a win...I really have no idea...but I haven't seen that happen with the national media.
<< <i>Geez...I never would have thought 2 years ago that I would actually think that Terrell Owens was the classier of the two. >>
indeed. Owens is not racist.
<< <i>I assume many white basketball players, black swimmers, black hockey players, asian football players and white north american sprinters feel the same way. >>
Donovan, STFU and play.
Palmer is still young with upside and has plenty of career left to lead him team to a title. McNabb is clearly on the downside, had four good chances and failed on all of them. Don't you think Jim Kelly's legacy would greater if his BiLLLLs didn't lose all four Super Bowls they were in?
Besides, I hope he's not complaining about criticism now, because after two games this year, he deserves it. The Eagles offense sucks and they might actually be wishing they had Jeff Garcia back for a year or two to help Kevin Kolb get ready to assume the future of the franchise at QB.
