First Pop - First Evidence of Trimming

I received my first grades today and did OK, mostly 7's and 8's...was hoping for better, but not a horrible start. I guess I can use them as a basis for determining future grades.

The one annoying part was receiving an Evidence of Trimming on a nice 1956 Eddie Mathews I submitted. I bought on ebay with the hopes of getting a nice grade to add to my collection, but instead got the dreaded Not Holdered. I went back and looked at the eBay listing I won and it does state on the bottom "Ungraded cards are not guaranteed to grade by third party grading companies due to alterations of any kind. All cards are guaranteed authentic or your money back in full." Should have read everything before. Also, his feedback is private, which I never knew you could do, so I couldn't read if there were other instances of this on his cards. All in all, I guess I got a little zealous and learned a lesson, at least not a particularly expensive one, about what to look for on these eBay ads. Now my question...should I stick this cards in my raw 1956 set I'm putting together (it's not the greatest looking set, due to funds, but it's nice enough), do I try to resell on ebay with a notation about the Evidence of Trimming and try to recoup a few bucks, or is the card pretty much worthless and I should stick it in my son's bike spokes?

Also, received one card that received an 8ST. I know there were some gum stains on the front, so that's not shocking. How does that effect the price of the card...how much below the 8 price does it drop?

Thanks in advance!

According to PSA it will drop by 2 grades if used in the set registry.

That is up to you, but if you are building a lower grade set I would put it in the set and not worry about it.
  • You say his feedback is private?? If he is selling he is in violation of Ebay rules. You can have private feedback, but you cannot sell with it Private.

What is his ID? Contrary to popular belief you can read Private Feedback members feedback. It just takes some legwork.
  • He currently has nothing for sale, which seems strange since I know he had numerous items before. I was able to see that he has received 3 negs in the past month...so something's going on with what he's selling. I guess another seller to look out for...and I need to learn to be more scrupulous about who I buy from.
  • Take the card and put it somewhere near your computer monitor. This way it serves 2 functions. 1) Nice baseball display piece. 2) Will serve as a reminder every time you go to bid on a raw 56 card, on ebay, from a buyer with an alteration / no return disclaimer. image

It was bubblegumsportscards. They have a pretty high feedback, but 3 negs in one month seems strange for them.

    Thanks for everyone's help/advice.

on old cards yu get alot of evid of trimming,i got a pile of 50 bowman fb here thats came back that way,sux-bought a 250.00 sammy baugh came back trimmed, not a thing wrong with it,measures up to the other 50 bowman,i think they're nuts myself-you can send em back in and next time might be fine!!!!?????conspiracy theory
  • Looking at what I have seen so far they only have 10 negs from 6 different users, so it is possible all three negs they have is from the same buyer. Doing some checking.

In the past 30 days they have sold 100 items and recieved 95 positive feedback and 3 negs. That is not a real bad percentage if all three negs cam from the same buyer. Would take a while though to sort out because all the listings were private as well.
  • I bought a few '54 Topps from bubblegumsportscards and they too said evidence of trimming when I sent them in to PSA... However, I do think PSA uses 'trimming' a little too loose.
  • Send the 56 mathews in again. Remember psa does not use a loop or measure cards anymore it is just guess work and for the life of me how in the hell can you tell anything about a card without a loop or measuring ruler?
