What is your most embarrassing coin submission...

When you have received your coins back from a grading company, what is your most embarrassing result?

Mine fortunately does not involve a heavy financial loss, but nevertheless, I am embarrassed relating it to you, as you may wonder what kind of grading skills I have after reading this.

I submitted a 1957 Canadian Silver dollar thinking that it would go ms64 ($70.00) or possible ms65 ($900.00). When I received the grading results, on the form, I noticed a grade of VF-30 for this coin. I immediately thought "what kind of arse graded this coin as a VF??' Well, after I looked at the coin again, I then thought 'what kind of arse bought this coin in the first place??!!' That arse was me, and actually I figured out what happened. First of all, I looked at a million coins that day and obviously I was a little tired when I purchased this coin and secondly, I relied too much on the coin's surfaces (as they were very 'clean and mark-free') however, I forgot to look at the high spots (dumb) on the coin. When I did, I noticed the Queen's profile to be very well worn. It was at this moment I felt like a fool!!

I collect mainly Roosie dimes and I over the years have sent in 2 dimes that both graded AU58. I thought they would grade MS65 or higher.

My first three or four submissions to PCGS all sucked. I used crappy flips and all the coins graded very low because they became covered in haze.

Hey wait a minute ....I had one that came back 58 and one 60!!!! I thought they were at least 64s!

I gave up trying to grade them and sold all of my Roosies shortly after that!!

back when I was just starting out, I had a whole bunch of 1897-O, 1896-O, and 1884-S Morgans on consignment that I was sure were all MS61 and 62. Got 'em back from NGC--All AU58.

I used presidential review on a counterfeit gold coin to get Mr Hall's Autograph. I was disappointed when he only signed it "David".

My most embarassing coin submission also turned out to be my best one at that time. I had purchased a raw choice unc rare date seated dime at auction for MS64 money for $6500. It came back MS64 the first time. I was sort of hoping for a 65 so I tried PCGS next and got a MS63! Not only was I embarrassed but I was looking at a $3000-$4000 loss. I tried offering the coin as a 63 and taking my lumps as I was in a tight cash position at the time. But no one would touch the coin at PQ 63 money. I was walking the LB bourse floor with it feeling like a dope. The only option was to send it back to NGC and hope it goes 64 again. For a month I held a MS63 coin that was potentially a $3000+ loss. I felt pretty bad.

Upon resubmission it regrades as MS65 and becomes pop 1 finest graded. The coin is sold over the phone for $15,000. Now that felt pretty good. 3 diff grades within 2 months - same coin. It was a legit 64+ coin. But back then it only really mattered what the plastic said.

MY last submission 1893-cc grade cleaned. Grampa , dad , me and uncle had 400.00 in that coin. And never seen the shine on it. Also 1934-s peace dollar altered surface missed that, 75.00 in that coin and 1934-d peace dollar 80.00 in that coin cleaned missed the shine. Also i thought the majority of coins would grade ms63 easy but got a hodgepodge of 61,62,63,64 grades. I just missed this one. Lost my confidence in grading morgans and peace dollars. Still in shock over this one.

I submitted an 1882-O/S Morgan Dollar to ICG thinking I'd score something like MS 62 or 63. It was returned in a bodybag for cleaning and whizzing. That was before I had really studied how to spot such doctored coins. I paid $17 for that coin off of a bid board for that coin so fortunately that was no huge loss there.

In another submission to PCGS, I submitted a 1942 Nickel 5c. It was Type 1 (non-silver composition) and I knew darn well it was Type 1, but for some reason I put Type 2 (silver-wartime composition) on the form. It came back PR 66 and Type 1, and I hope the graders didn't think I was pulling a fast one on them.

In November of 2006 I sent in an 1883cc and an 1884cc morgans to be graded. Both were ex GSA that I
personally broke out of the plastic to put in my Nevada shaped CC holder. They sat there for 35 years before
I submitted for grading. I was very upset when they came back in BB's as altered surfaces. Now, they went
straight from the GSA holders to the NV holder and never touched again. No wiping, cleaning or other enhancement
including dipping/acetone. Nope, just from one holder to the other. Both are MS65's in my opinion. But, PCGS
does not agree with me. Maybe not embarrassing but very disappointing. At first I was really embarrassed and then
it was just upseting when I realized I didn't do anything I shouldn't have. Even GSA's were messed with! I
still do not see what they see under a 50x magnification. Back into the NV holder they went. I'll try again in
30 more years, or my grandkids will!

Raw 1795 $1 that I thought would grade G4 bt it came back "Filed Rim". I showed the coin to several dealers before hand and none saw that. When I got the coin back, I still coldn't see it so I sent it to NGC and they BB'd it for the same thing. Live and learn....

I bought an 1886-O Morgan $ raw off e-bay for $500 that looked better than any of my Pcgs ms-63's.I wasn't a C.U.member at the time so I submitted to Anacs just to see if they thought it was at least MS.It came back a 61.I really felt it was undergraded,so later after I became a member I sent it to Pcgs and got a 58.I still say it is a 63

I don't see why NGC overgrading should hurt the hobby as a whole. As long as people know NGC overgrades and they subtract 1-2 points when looking up values in PCGS' price guide, anyway.

just received info on a recent submision to PCGS: 1849 gold $1 open wrealth - thought it would go AU range, but came back as being altered and 1914 gold quarter eagle came back being cleaned - thought it would at least grade AU, maybe more - did I miss something?? - hope I can learn from this - does PCGS tell you why the coins were graded cleaned/altered or do they just bb it with no explanation??

These probably would have been 61s and 62s if they had different mint marks (or no mint mark).

This is less likely to be an inability to grade than it is ignorance of the fact that the TPGs are way tighter on condition rarity Morgans.

I would certainly agree. It was one major reason why I sort I left the hobby behind for a while. I felt that game of upgrading and multiple grades offered no benefit to the hobby in general. Guess I was very disillusioned in 1989. First the grading problem was solved, and then it wasn't. Still isn't today.

I don't see why NGC overgrading should hurt the hobby as a whole. As long as people know NGC overgrades and they subtract 1-2 points when looking up values in PCGS' price guide, anyway.

The real grade of that coin was a very strong 64. In hindsight, I think PCGS graded it 63 due the deeper coloration and subdued luster. Had it been dipped, a certain 64 as it was very clean. The fact that in 3 trips to the TPG's this coin received 3 diff grades is a testimonial to the inconsistency of the grading.
