I would like to Crossover my NGC 1916D Merc to PCGS, but should I crack it out first?

I just signed up for the Platinum membership for my 8 free submissions. Since NGC already certified it, and if I cracked it out, there shouldn't be a problem with authenticity right? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't - unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Leave it alone and take it to them before cracking it.

I agree in not cracking it out. It wouldn't be the first time graders disagree'd on something and if it doesn't cross to PCGS due to authenticity problems, you then have the option of addressing it with NGC.

Otherwise, you just got a cool dime.

NGC is quite tough on 1916-D dimes. They picked the 1916-D dime to show how tough they can be in grading.

Same with the 1942/1 and 1945-P dimes. Too bad they are soft in grading nearly every other merucry dime.

Many collectors see the 1916-D dime in a NGC holder as equal to the PCGS brand.

Unless it's a high-end MS coin, I would crack it out first.

No need to crack it out just send it in like it is be safe not sorry. image

Much of it depends on the grade. If it's circulated, you're probably okay. But if it's high mint state grade or attractively toned, the risk is greater. In the end, you should just send it in as-is. Why take any risk in having the coin bodybagged or downgraded.

I would not send it in unless left in the holder. There could be a problem you didn't see. And you don't want a coin like that to come back in a BB.

Nope. Try to cross in the slab!

If you have to ask, you should leave it in the slab.
  • The potential gain you might receive by cracking it first (grading by PC at the same level, or perhaps a one increment upgrade on a good day?) is dramatically offset by the potential downside you face if the coin BBs at PCGS.

    Leave it alone.
  • I have been fairly successful in crossovers and even upgrades without cracking the coin out. An unwarrented risk in my view.

Send it in and ask for "crossover". It may or may not come back in the NGC holder. If it does, PCGS is gracious enough to leave it in the holder that will secure you the most money should the coin go to auction.
This from my own experience with coins.

So if you send in a coin for grading at PCGS and ask for a crossover, and PCGS decides they can't slab the coin for whatever reason, there are times when PCGS will STILL crack the coin out of its current slab and send it back in a BB?.....

Not true. However, if you ask for "CROSS AT ANY GRADE", then you may be right.

Leave it in the holder unless you are a national expert and consultant on 16-d dime authentication.

Cracked out an NGC graded Peace dollar, graded MS62 & it came back AU58. image
But also cracked out a 1999-S Silver Quarter, NGC PF69UCAM that came back PCGS PR69DCAM. image

You just take your chances when you crack them out.

Since these are freebie gradings, they all have to be similar. In other words, all 8 have to be raw, or all 8 have to be cross-overs, etc.
I would not crack & find other $300+ coins to send in (if you have any).
Sending in common coins seem like a waste of free submissions.
