So what am I missing here in the Goldberg auction?

Aside from the fact that I don’t fully agree with their grades, I’m really struggling with the relative estimates for these two examples of the same coin, both from the Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection in the Goldberg auction:

A PCGS MS64 (?!) estimated at $600-800:

and an NGC MS63 estimated at $1,000-1,200:

I think they have the price's backwards as I like the PCGS piece much better
  • I think we might see some record prices for these Chinese pieces in the auction... wouldn't suprise me to see these two coins go for $4000+

Roy, you're not missing a thing. image

Regarding GB estimates, you just gave me an idea for a dreary, winter weekend; namely, go through the Hesselgesser (Russian material) cat. and compile actual prices realized vs. the pre-auction estimates.

China is rapidly becoming the scorching hot market that the Russian stuff was 3-4 years ago (and still is), and yes, that NGC coin either has some very obvious die polish marks in the field, or a profusion of hairlines.

Anyway, the market will 'speak' up at gavel time.

Well, let's see if they reply to my inquiry whether that is the case, and if not, why the PCGS 64 is estimated well below the NGC 63!
