Spending Kennedy Halves

I occasionally search boxes of Kennedy halves. When I do I use them as pocket change for tolls, coffee and what not. Yesterday I went to the coffee shop and spent three dollars and gave them six halves.

Today I go back to the shop and the owner gives everyone ahead me their change in $1.00 bills. She gives me my change in halves. The same ones I gave her the day before. Touche.

    See, you've made them circulate.

    Good job!

When you go in tomorrow, give her the same halves again.

And then never go back. image

  • Better yet, Throw some Ikes her way!

I'd love to see the chaos that would ensue.

That is funny. You have circulated the halves. Problem is the circulation is only between you and the coffee shop as you both keeping swapping them back to each other. Keep it up, I guarantee you that you will win with time.

Sounds good to me! Keep spending them there and see how many times you can get them going back and forth.
  • I do the same with my 64' Kennedys. Usually provide payment with them at Dollar Store. I've got 200 left to circulate.image

I know this question has come up before but does the coffee shop have to accept half dollars?
  • A coffee shop, or any place, doesn't have to accept any form of payment they don't want. At least that was the verdict when dollar notes were discussed.

Please send them to me. I'll give you double your money in dollar store gift certificates, if you want.

your giving away eight to nine times the value of what the coin is worth. Your $1.00 purchase at the dollar store is costing you $8 - $9.00 dollars.

And if you don't believe him, use this calulator thing

  • Better carry some $2 bills for the coffee shop too. You don't want to run out of coins and have to give them a $5 bill so they can give you half and dollar coins in change.

Really throw her for a loop and use some old IHCs, 2c pieces, trimes, half dimes, etc.....then see if she gives you back the same things you spend image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Hey guys:

I am in that coffee shop everyday. I have dropped every conceivable coin on her - presi. dollars, $2.00 bills and halves and sacs. She or her help always takes whatever I throw at them.

I have not tried Ikes yet - that's a good one.

And no she is not a looker.
  • I love spending ikes, but they are getting too hard to find without a big premium.

We used to buy them at $1.05 and wholesale them out by the bag at $1.08-$1.10, but decided it wasn't worth the bother. Now we just buy them in in collections at face, and give them out as change with purchases.

  • I had to tell a checkout girl that the kennedy half was worth 50 cents. She thought it was a dollar, so I told her to read the reverse.

    That is funnyimage

Kennedy's are SOOOO UGLY.... A few years ago tried to get a small coffee at 711 and pay with 2 Kennedy halfs and the clerk looked at those halfs and then looked at me and said...

"Keep those, the coffee is on me"
