Goodell hands out the punishment in Patriots cheating scandal

New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for videotaping an opponent's offensive and defensive signals.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.

"This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field," Goodell said in a letter to the Patriots.

    We deserve it
  • It sounds reasonable although I don't understand what their making or not making the playoffs has to do with which draft choices they have to give up.
  • Should have been along the lines of the $100 million fine McLaren just had to pay for spying on Ferrari.
  • So what happens to the pick(s) that they are stripped of?

Pretty sure everyone just moves up.

    Yeah we do.
Stupid, just stupid. We are one of the best teams in the NFL already.
    Cheating was not necessary.

    Chicken Sh!t punishment!

According to John Clayton on ESPN right now, the Patriots already have TWO first round picks and TWO third round picks next year. So now, they'll just lose the extra picks...BIG F'ng DEAL!!!image

And taking money from these millionaires (if not billionaires) doesn't do a thing to them!

Goodell is proving thus far to be an excellent commissioner - swift and decisive action, tolerating no shenanigans, which in my view strengthens even more the already quite strong NFL.

I like the fact that he did consider suspending Bill. Which I think might have sent a harsher message than taking away a few picks and some cash. The cash doesnt matter to anyone involved.

Yeah, it is a BIG deal. A first rounder is HUGE, whether you have one, two, or three extra, you're talking about potential cornerstones that will carry you in the next few years. Imagine the Pats without huge impact players like 1st rounders: Seymour, Maroney, Wilfork, etc.. That's how big of loss is. Diamonds in the rough are so rare, you almost never find them. Brady was a fluke at 199th pick overall. If Belichick was suspended for say 4 games, the Pats can still potentially win without him for those 4 games and after that 4th game, they would feel no more lingering reprocussions. I'm sure the Pats would have just LOVED a few suspended games over this. They're going to be feeling the impact of this for the next two years or so if not more.

damn fine analysis, I agree 100%...it is a huge penalty.

A first rounder is a big deal. It might have been better to take a forfeit. Remember, the Pats were one player away (Deion Brach) from winning last year's SB.
  • I heard a great idea for a penalty: suspend Belichick for the next jets game.
