  • You of course, were correct at ---- .217 ---- Came from Tiger Trivia book.

Well, even the best hitters are occasionally given the day off (unless your name is Ripken, in which case you'd stay in there even if you were hurt which sometimes hurts the team for the sake of the streak, but I digress), but if your team is down a run or two (or tied) and you start to mount a threat when the pitcher or other weak-hitting player is about to come up, all bets are off.

  • Perfect example of why small sample sizes gives absolutely no indication of a player's performance. Its why I laugh so hard when someone tries to call a player 'clutch' because 'hey he's batting .400 with RISP and 2 outs!' forgetting to look at its happened over just a few at bats.

All players revert to the mean given enough at bats.
  • I don't know how many at bats...I only read this in a Tiger Trivia book that did NOT
tell of how many at bats. It just suprised me, not trying to as stitzen says make
a point about his performance, merely that a guy who batted .367 his careeer,
only hit .217 as a pinch hitter, nothing more, nothing less. SHOCK VALUE I GUESS!

  • KalineFan-

I didn't mean to imply you were degrading his numbers, I was simply pointing out that such a small sample size can skew both positively and negatively. One would never think of Cobb as a .217 hitter, just like people should never take a small sample size (like my example of batting with RISP) and take either out context.
  • stitzen-point taken....understand now....

I have to think pinch-hitting is not that easy for a player to do in the first place.
You are cold coming up to the plate to begin with. You were not in the field,
your head is not really "in the game" as they say......I don't know....I think
pinch-hitting has to be a very very tough situation for any hitter.
