F'n PAYPAL! What is this?

Just logged into my paypal account and I have an unresolved case and a negative balance.
Found the email in my yahoo account.

Dear Joshua Thompson,

One of the benefits of using PayPal is that we make every effort to
alert
you to potentially problematic transactions. Our goal is to help you
make
sound business decisions.

From time to time, we request additional information about PayPal
payments.
This is a security measure meant to protect you from problem
transactions.

We would like to learn more about this transaction. Please log in to
your
PayPal account and provide some information.

We strongly advise that you not ship the item until our investigation
is
complete. If you have already shipped the item, please log in and let
us
know where you shipped it.

We have placed a temporary hold on the funds until the investigation is
complete.

I am fairly certain I shipped it via the paypal shipping label thing but it's not listed with a "Check shipment details" or even a "Print Shipping Label" icon anymore. It's over $50 so I would have put DC on it so that's not an issue. But what the hell is this? It doesn't look like a buyer initiated thing, just some random paypal thing.

    SPOOF!

DON'T CLICK ON LINKS IN EMAIL. GO TO PAYPAL FROM YOUR BOOKMARKS!

IF YOU CAN'T GET SIGNED ON THEN THEY ALREADY CHANGED YOUR PASSWORD. CALL PAYPAL NOW TO REPORT THAT AND SET A NEW PASSWORD.

I typed in caps because I was shouting. It's important!

  • Actually the scam artist's have gotten better. I've had spoof fhishing scam emails sent with my full name on the message.

I think he stated that in his account paypal has already debited the money and there is an open case.

this sucks , hopefully you have the right deliveryconfirmation. they definately do this on there own , I sent a 4k payment once and the guy overnighted my cards so i had them in hand in the morning , that afternoon paypal refunded the money to my account .

That's not a spoof - if you read his post, he says that when he logged into his account, he found this. While I agree that you have to be very careful, and the scammers get better every day at this (could they please find something more productive to do?) this time it's PayPal at work.

I know this, because the same thing just happened to me. I sold three items to a repeat customer, who after he left me positive feedback for all three cards, went NARU. Why, I don't know. After almost 6 weeks passed from the date of delivery, PayPal decides to "investigate" all three transactions (he paid seperately for the cards, a few days apart for each, but by his choice) and they held the funds in my account. I called PayPal, and filled out the online forms that they sent asking for the DC information. The PayPal rep wouldn't go into much detail, but she said that they suspected fraud on the part of the buyer.

Now you find out there's fraud, PayPal? The cards are gone! And if I lose the money and the cards, I'm not happy. After almost 10 days, they concluded that I sent the cards to the confirmed address, and they released the funds back to me. So, it's important to make sure that you ship to a confirmed address when selling to a PayPal buyer.

Yes, it is not a spoof email. It actually is in my paypal account and I did have an email as well. I actually send the spoof emails to paypal on a near daily basis. This is a $70 transaction, and my account is currently -$39. I called PayPal and actually got a couple of nice people on the phone. They said it could be anything from a random investigation (what?) to credit card fraud. The buyer has a confirmed address and she did tell me that if I have DC I should be covered under the seller protection policy. I am sure that I do, I just have to go find it.

So for now, my account sits with a negative balance and I'll put in the dc# and hopefully move along. This is only the 2nd complaint on my account in the 10 or so years I've used PayPal. I think I'm going to change my auctions to only allow paypal payments from confirmed addresses. Sucks that I'll have to do that but I understand why people do it. Get burned once and that's all it takes.

I'm glad you'll probably eventually get your money back, but I wonder how much cash paypal is floating at any given time from crap like this? If they're worried about buyer/credit card fraud, perhaps they should make it more difficult to open an account?

It's getting more and more dangerous to accept paypal for high ticket items, with the biggest concern being bogus not as described complaints. I can understand why sellers like DSL pass on them.

I understand as well. Truthfully though, I've had one bad selling experience in my entire time so I can't complain too much. I did have a couple of bad experiences as a buyer but that's another story altogether.

If there wasn't an obvious, repeatable disparity between hammer prices on auctions that take paypal, vs those that don't, I'd be further ahead not taking it. But the simple fact is that I get more bids, and more money for my auctions (I tend to only bid on these auctions as well) where paypal is accepted. Sadly, there is no competition, or none that ebay allows anyway, so it is your only option. I just hope this gets straightened out now that I've provided the dc# as requested.
  • okay, i get these a lot. forward the email to spoof@paypal.com they will respond within an hour usually and they will tell you whether or not it is legit or not. they will also tell you tips on what to look for...I had one the other day actually...it was a spoof. Do it ASAP!!

If you log onto your PayPal account there will be an "Alert" at the top of the screen. That will tell you if the message is real or not. The most common reason that message comes up is possible fraud. In my case I sold some computer memory to be shipped to Ukraine, but the PayPal account was a hijacked one. Luckily I had not sent yet so no damage was done.

However, one of my best friends bought some stuff from me recently in person and paid me through PayPal and they pulled the same thing. There was no reason to believe it was a fraudulent transaction. Since I had no delivery confirmation it took about 3 weeks to straighten out. The only way they would communicate was through email. This was one case where technology was an impediment to progress - a simple phone call or two would have cleared everything up in a matter of minutes..
  • Wow. You called PayPal and actually got a human being? I just recently got my new phone number for the home I just bought/moved into, and updating my PayPal account has been a nightmare. I currently don't have a phone so I can't update my home address via PayPal since they have to "call you" to tell you the special code. The problem occurs when there is no way for them to get in touch with you. I tried calling them, but their stupid voice-recognition software blows goat dick and kept screwing things up. After being on hold for 3-hours at work, I finally got to speak to a human being who had no idea what I meant when I said "I would like to update my address and phone number since I just recently moved." It took an hour for it to get updated, and yet it still isn't updated since my credit card company hasn't updated their computers yet and PayPal directly links to your credit card company when verifying your home address. Right now, I HATE PAYPAL!!!!!!

    UPDATE!

Got my money back from PayPal within 5 days of providing the dc#. Got an email last night from ebay:

Notification of change to your feedback--

    Dear envoy98,

A user whom you have recently transacted with has been indefinitely suspended from eBay within 90 days of registration. We have removed any feedback they left for you or others.

eBay removes feedback when a user is indefinitely suspended for certain policy violations within 90 days of registration. eBay takes the position that members indefinitely suspended soon after registration shouldn't be able to permanently impact another member's account.

To view your current feedback score, visit your Member Profile.

    Thank you,
    eBay

    --Guess who was NARU'd?
    That's right! partyallnightson

    Very odd.
Glad my situation worked out. He only got one neg for non-payment so he must've had some other scam running.

  • My account was froze on Sun from suspicious activity. I completed what they wanted me to do and its still froze. I asked around and heard horror stories of it taking anywhere from 1-6 months depending on the situation so I called them. They were unable to remove it on the phone but said it should be done in 24 hours. Oh my time on hold? No more than minute and a half. Yeah, Im lucky.

I've had them from eBay and PP addressing me by my full name.

  • One of my lastest Fake (confirmed by Paypal) emails from "Paypal" used my full name. I assume thats what threw the red flags and got my acct. frozen.

Im now paranoid at what they know about me and instead of changing all my passwords for everything it might be easier to clear my computer and just legally change my name. lol
