Your thoughts on the authenticity of this piece...

Howdy,

You may have seen on the US Board this thread

I had every indication that the coin was genuine when I sold it, including:
-Marshall pedigree
-Spink sale
-Very trustworthy consignor

That said, please let me know your thoughts on the piece.

No idea, Jeremy. I would start with comparing the elements of the counter-stamp to known authentic examples. There's nothing about the cob features that's raising a red flag for me, but these are not really my area.

    Jeremy:

There is only one board member that I know of that would have any idea and that would be Mr. Eureka. He was at the UBS sale in Switzerland and I don't know if he is back in the States yet.3Mark
I'm traveling on memory and running out of fuel.
  • I would first ask a question - did the buyer give any explanation as to why they thought the coin was a fake ? That being said, I realize that you base your belief of the coin's authenticity on its pedigree - can't say as I blame you for that. But there are a couple of things I would question.

First, I can see nothing about the original coin that would indicate to me that it was a product of the Guatemala mint. Second, the counterstamp - the C.A.R. counterstamp should have legends around the edge of the counterstamp and this one does not.

Now I am by no means an expert on this series, but every book I have on the subject indicates my comments to be true. There may well be more than one version of the C.A.R. counterstamp, but I can find no record of it. While I am not saying that it is, it is possible that the coin is not authentic as advertised.

The buyer never told me anything. My only indication came from the feedback that was left for me.

Spink listed this piece as "type II countermark (1838/41) of radiate sun over three volcanoes within circle (KM.102)" back in 2004.

You can start by matching these "Type II" counter-stamps to the piece you have:

    Sold by UBS in 2003:

Well, I'm back. I doubt anyone would suspect the underlying coin to be fake. As for authenticating the countermark, I would not call myself an authority, but it looks good to me.

BTW, I don't know that these countermarks have ever been faked, although some countermarks from heavily rusted punches were likely applied in more recent times. Obviously, that's not the case with Jeremy's piece.

JK I wouldn't be happy with his feedback. Who told him it's fake? Why didn't he contact you first? Why is he calling you names in the feedback?. Also, if you look at the history of his purchases they are mostly for Barbie related products, dolls and no other coin purchases(unless its his wife's account).

Jeremy, to support your argument, you can send him/her the original Spink description found here.

    This guy's a real loser.

Note that somebody else left him a neutral, saying,

<< <i>Complains in feedback without contacting seller first >>

Now maybe the coin is fake and maybe it isn't (it looks fine to me, but what do I know, and if you have provenance from Spink of all places, well... geez...).

Have you left him feedback yet? He deserves a neg, too, for not contacting you, obviously.

And you need to respond to his neg in your own profile, using calm and rational language. If you calmly refute his claim and use polite language, it will contrast with his harsh name-calling and serve to illustrate who the REAL idiot is.

On an entirely different topic, I would have loved to have that on the Holey Coin Vest. I don't have any cobs on there yet, and a counterstamped one would be doubly cool.

    Could be a gal.

Look at what else this nimrod has bought... two auctions of perfume, and at least three of McDonald's Barbie Happy Meal dolls.

At this point, the temptation to say something like, "Maybe you should stick to collecting Happy Meal toys" would be enormous. image

I have no idea about the item, but that feedback was completely uncalled for.

I agree a calm rebuttal will go a long way from a buyer's point of view.

Though the temptation to reply that the buyer is a Sailor Moon loving/Barbie addicted/brainless nimrod/who is much more likely to have gotten a counterfeit beanie baby than a counterfeit coin/ and who was clearly raised by a mangy barn owl given the lack of manners/ twit.

I think you have to go through the Hong Kong ebay site to get that much space for a reply though.
