Who here has the longest run of Topps sets (any sport; pics welcome)?

As you guys know, one of the most popular collecting projects is to build a run of classic Topps sets (or in my case, other brands too). Right now I'm the proud owner of a complete run from 1976-2004. My goal (realistically) is to someday get it to 1974-present, although 1970-present would be better still (though for 1972 and further I'll most likely have to settle for EX-EXMT sets instead of NRMT/MT ones). And OF COURSE, I'd love to go even further back into those classic 1960s sets, but each year is at $2500-$3500ish in mid-grade depending on year; obviously not going to happen in the near future. image I also hope to build a run of Topps football sets someday as well (same year range as above; I want to start with 1980-94).

So, anyone here have longer Topps runs, perhaps 1951-present? image Pics are especially welcome.

  • Have a Topps run from '71 to present - 37 Sets. The 74 is lacking just a couple, but the rest are complete. Also working on '54 and '69, but I'm no where near close on those.
  • 1980-2007 Complete Sets. Also includes all traded/update sets during that time, the 1992 Gold and Gold Winners parallels, the 2007 Red-Back parallels, the 1993 Rockies/Marlines parallels, the 1998 D-Backs/D-Rays parallels, one of every pack of base/update cards for each of those sets mentioned above as well as a large number of insert sets from those years. Once I've finished moving into my new home and built some cabinets to store everything I'll post some pictures.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

I have a run from 1973-2006 minus only the 1975 set, but I do have a complete 1969 Topps set. So, I guess to qualify, I have a 1976-2006 run.

I have a run of Topps from 1970 to 2005. However, the 1970 to 1974 I bought recently to resell on Ebay, so they don't really count towards my collection.

In my collection, I have 1975 to 2005.

I have complete sets from 1968-1990something. I quit collecting newer sets when they started with the insert insanity. Most of my sets are NM-MT or better.

Bishop - who posts here from time to time - has a complete Topps run including Desert Storm and some of the best test, insert sets etc. on the planet!!!

He also has some nice wax to include a 52T graded pack.

Not only is he the nicest guy ya want to meet but is very humble and unassuming about collecting.

Some of the big collectors - especially prewar - seem a bit tightly wound IMO.

I agree with everything Mike said. I have one of his old SCD catalogs. He had check marked every set that he had. I was in awe! Super, super nice guy. I've never met him personally, only through these boards, but he has helped me out more than once.

  • My whole goal is to have complete Topps sets (Philadelphia from 64-67 in football) from my birth year (1964). Had to stop somewhere so 1985 for baseball, 1989 for football with the Score set, 1986 for hockey with OPC when Topps didn't have a set, and 1981 w/ the last Topps set for basketball. Always working to have NM or better, all cards centered, and all variations and inserts. Stored in Ultra Pro pages and in Unikeep Case Binders.

    Football 1964 - 1989, Kelloggs 1970, 71

I have Topps baseball 1954-73 complete. I sold 1974 and up, and quit buying sets in the early 1990s. I would like to get a 1953 Topps set, but the cost is more than I want to spend at this time.

  • The whole reason I got into collecting Topps cards is because of a neighbor of mine growing up. He is SUCH a nice guy that he would always let me come over and look at his cards and he'd constantly surprise me with a random pack of baseball cards when I'd see him. Incredibly great guy and while my dad was always out to sea and never around to spend time with me, he would teach me about baseball and what the cards were, etc. He has a complete run of EVERY Topps set from 1951 through at least 1991. As Topps started introducing insert sets up the wazoo, he slowed down his collecting but I still think he picked up complete base sets every year. It's simply amazing the collection he has. His grandson is one very lucky kid whom I hope will appreciate the history behind the cards. image

  • Well it's not the longest run but I have a complete run of baseball from 1974-1992. I dropped out of collecting in 1992 and stopped the run there. I got back into it sporadically over the years since but never added any Topps sets. I jumped back into collecting with a vengeance around the time of the release of the 2007 Topps. I assembled the first series set and may just buy the second series to finish off the set but will only fill in the modern gaps if I can pick up cheap factory sets.

My real project now is going backwards in time and finishing up the vintage sets that I had partially complete. When I d0 I'll have a run from 1969 to 1992. Right now I am at 82%completion of the 69 , 87%of the 70 , 86%of the 71 , 80% of the 72 and 97% of the 73. Mostly I need high numbers from all of these sets. The main Keys that I am missing are a 69 Jackson and a 70 Ryan.

After this I plan on going backwards starting with 1968

Bob posted earlier in the thread, bobbsbbcards. When his sig lines says he collects all baseball cards between 1951 and 1991, he really means it. Also an amazing unopened pack collection

Nice thread guys. I'll weigh in with topps 72-1990 when i stopped collecting. Was about halfway done with 70 and 71 at that time. Now I just collect heritage (2001-2007) and a&G (2007). If I ever get back to the 71 and older sets, I'll stick with raw mid-grade ex, ex-mt.
