Pirates GM Dave Littlefield fired !!!

I know that there are several suffering fellow Pirates fans on here so I just wanted to share my opinion.

I am very excited over this news. Littlefield did have his hands tied but seriously the guy needed to go. I am almost certain that Tracy will be out of here too. The hirings to come of a new CEO , GM and hopefully manager in my opinion are the most important hires in the history of the team. They need knowledgeable baseball men. McClatchy meant well and needs to be given his due for getting the stadium built , but he was clueless as to the game of baseball. Littlefield too didn't have a clue. The Pirates need experience in these positions. The new CEO and GM will determine whether or not the Pirates will ever be a winner again. I really think that the Nuttings should go too , but in their defense why should they blow cash on a team that is profiting from losing ? The team is so far away from being a perennial contender that it would be idiotic to blow cash to win a few more games. Besides no one of any real value wants to come here anyways. The Pirates need to be built through a strong minor league system , international signings and shrewd trading. Littlefield was incompetent as a talent evaluator. I have confidence that a competent CEO and GM will be able to finally right this ship. This is the Nuttings' chance to save face , their last chance. If they hire incompetents again then they need to be run out of town.

Hopefully the tradition of baseball in Pittsburgh will restore their winning tradition. Outside of the late 40's & most of the 50's, Pittsburgh has always had a competitive team. Actually, I need to add the years from the early 90’s to the present. Ever since B Bonds failed to throw out freakin Sid Bream at home in their last playoff appearance, the Pirates have failed to win 81 games since.
  • I'm reading a Roger Kahn book right now called Memories of Summer. In it he tells how Charlie Dressen used the pathetic Pirates to motivate the 1952 Dodgers before the World Series. Dressen told the guys to imagine that they were playing Pittsburgh , not New York. Just to imagine that the uniforms of the Yankees said Pittsburgh , not New York. His point was that it was still baseball whether you were playing against the legendary Yankees or the pitiful Pirates. I know that the Pirates of 1952 were one of the all time worst teams but still as a lifelong Pirates diehard this story about the pathetic Pirates being used as a motivator still ticked me off. Makes me wonder how many managers of today reference the Pirates in the same way.

If it makes you feel any better that strategy didn't work for the 1952 Dodgers. image

Matt Morris at the trading deadline? This had everyone shaking their head.

  • they need another Jim Leyland..... he really spun those dull, yellow threads into some gold in the 80s......sorry tho, we got him!

You also have some of our other great former managers on your staff as well. Gene Lamont and Lloyd McClendonn. I know Van Slyke is on the staff and I thought some other former Pirates were as well maybe Rafiael Belliard or Don Slaught???

I can't be more thrilled. As much as I distrust the Nuttings, how can you blame them when the GM passes up Matt Wieters for Daniel Moskos, apparently due to the Boros' signing bonus demands, and then immediately turns around and signs Matt Morris for more than they could have signed Wieters for? Littlebrains blew money on Roberto Hernandez, Tony Armas, Jeremy Burnitz, Sean Casey, the washed up Japanese pitcher, Joe Randa and so many more that it's hard to imagine how anyone could do less with that small amount of money. How about converting John Van Benschoten from power hitter to pitcher??? This for a team who desperately needs runs!
  • spend some money on some real talent and not washed up 2nd tier free agents.

the bucs have some very talented people; sanchez, bay, gorzelanny...get them some help.
  • It has been 15 years since we have had a winning season. We the fans are ready for something, anything!!!! image
