Cable Company took my ESPN Classic Away!

My cable company moved ESPN Classic to the next (i.e. you have to pay more) tier. This is something I really looked forward to after a hard day's work. They show alot of the great old boxing fights plus the "Ringside" biography series, and some great vintage "60 Minutes" sports interviews. They yanked it without warning and amazingly it's the only channel out of about 3 trillion they moved. If they move it up yet another tier it would be cheaper to pay Roger Staubach come to my house and let ME interview him. This corporate greed is out of control. image

  • Cable companies are truly evil. I pay $125 a month for cable and the internet and there is never a damn thing on it. I could go to a cheaper package but then I lose the few channels that I really do watch and still only save $20. I looked into getting Direct TV or the DIsh but by the time I add a internet provider to it I'm still not saving anymore. Do you have Comcast by the way ? That's the crap company that I have to deal with.

Cable companies are indeed the Devil. Medicom is the provider in my community. I couldnt have ESPN classic or news if I wanted it. Now there is big up roar because they will not add the Big Ten network. Looks like I will have to attend more Hawkeye games and hope the Michigan and OSU games are on one of the major networks. Cheap cheap cheap!

Brighthouse, which I THINK bought out Comcast here awhile back--I can't keep track anymore.

That's the same here in Pittsburgh also. You can only get the Big ten network if you have Direct TV or I guess the Dish
  • I have DirectTV and am a bit irked that I can't get ESPNU. Have to buy the sports package.

ESPN Classic is kind of hit or miss. Got home from work this week, stretched out on the couch and watched the '71 Series. Now that was COOL.

They've also been playing classic college football games. Again, very COOL.

Can do without the American Gladiators.

Have you raised hell with your provider?

  • Matt, you're too much!

Time-Warner did the exact same thing here in San Antonio on September 1st. They moved ESPN Classic from Basic to an elevated tier, and moved ESPN News from the Sports package to the Entertainment Package. I can not figure out why they moved a Sports channel out of the Sports package, it just makes absolutely no sense at allimage

All-in-all, it'll cost $5.00 more per month, but if it means anything (which I'm not sure about), we do now get ESPNU.

I agree though. Every month I want to send my cable company a pipe bomb instead of a check but Tonya wont let me image

I did. We cuddled, spooned, gently sobbed, spoke of our deepest hopes & fears. I awoke alone except for a cable bill taped to a sad teddy bear. The horror, the horror...

    I hear ya!!!

    I called the same morning!

It turned out great tho - I was paying alot of $ for the services I got.

Now I have a digital dvr box, more channels and for less money!!!

It pays to whine - sometimes.

  • Sometimes the best thing you can do is call the cable company and tell them you cannot afford their service any longer and want to switch to satellite. Many companies will suddenly come up with great packages or discounts to keep you. I got my bill cut in half for a year when I called. Doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot.

i have brighrhouse here in mi and they suck and are a super rip off...image
  • I thought my cable was expensive at 85.00 a month for Internet and cable.. I just have the basic set up and it has 4 ESPNs, Fox Sports and the NFL network.

When I called to cancel Time Warner - I had my telephone, internet and cable tv - it was 170 per mo.

They gave me the same thing that ATT has - so the 3 services are 99$ per mo. no including tax - and the cable TV I have now is better than before.

So, I agree - tell them you want to cancel and find a better deal - tell them about ATT's pick 3 out of 4 for 99 bucks - the four they offer: home phone, cell phone, tv and internet.

cannot agree more. plus comcast is the devil -- and I have to have my NFL Sunday ticket!

  • I have never regretted the move from cable to direct tv. Canceling cable tv and telling them where they could go was a great feeling. Other than ESPN U I now have all the sports channels I could ever want (including the new Big Ten channel) plus access to NFL Sunday Ticket. I am upset with myself that I put up with the cable companies poor channel selection and poor service as long as I did. It's been 3 years of Direct TV with no complaints from this sports fan.

  • I used to be a Comcrap....errrrrr....Comcast customer....When my x-wife and I bought our house we had cable modem through Adelphia because they were the cable provider in our area in Maryland and of course I got Directv. I loved the speed...etc.etc.etc...but when we got divorced I went to DSL through Verizon....yes it is not as fast but still ok for surfing for $20 less a month...and I obviously kept my Directv, I don't want to deal with Comcrap at all and I still have all the TV I want plus the NFL Package...and its cheaper per month than Comcrap. Go DSL and Directv....now I am rambling, someone tell me to shut up

gotta agree with the others who have and love DirectTV. I have DSL and a basic phone service that I only have for emergencies and local calls, two cell phones, and Direct TV with the HBO package and that costs about $190 a month. I don't think I could take ever going back to cable tv again.
  • stupid question, but on direct TV can you still get the local networks abc/nbc/fox, cbs? I need my regular Tv shows lol.
