  • Probably a lot better than opening old vintage wax which I've found has always been a mistake. The cards that I've opened from cello ('56 Topps fb come to mind) have done well with grading.

I have opened many cello packs, mostly GAI graded mid 60s baseball.

It is a crapshoot in terms of PSA grades, but can run anywhere from PSA 5 to PSA 10, depending on centering, minor hairlines, and corner wear. Mostly I got 8s, a few 9s. Many of the cellos were wrapped too tightly and have minor corner dings not readily visible on internet scans.

It is very helpful if you can inspect the packs with a loop prior to purchase, to examine the corners, or perhaps get a 7 day return privilege from the seller.

  • Just opened 80 BK cells and the top/bottom cards were damaged (bent corners) The inside cards seem to be 8/9 material. I'll see when they have the next special.

Early cellos (pre-1970) are much better than 1970s cellos which are wrapped so tight, it's almost a certainity that virtually all cards will suffer from dinged corners. For 1970s packs, wax is best, IMO, as there are more cards (8 to 10 usually) than you find in the pre-1970 packks (usually 5).

Grote is right on point--as usual
  • Just ripped a 59 Topps BB 12 card cello (GAI 9) a few days ago. About 1/2 of the cards will be 8s and 9s, the other 1/2 too oc or corner dings. I've opened several 61 BB cellos with similar results.

edited to add: it's almost always a losing proposition $ wise to rip, based on my experience. However, the thrill of a chance at a Gem Mint HOFer is often times too much to resist. image
