USFL Set. Sell unopened or open and submit stars?

I have this 1985 USFL Set that I bought in the 1980's and it has been sitting on my shelf since then. When I saw this month's grading special, I thought maybe I should submit the better cards. However, the set has not been opened. You can see in the scan that the tape has yellowed with age. I have checked the auctions and have not seen any sets sold that are still sealed. The ones that have sold all have been opened as far as I can tell. Any thoughts out there as to what would be best?

    OPEN IT!

On the downside, I believe centering is tough on that issue.

On the upside, if you have a good box, its a gold mine

I still say open it image

I agree. I opened mine last year that I bought new in 1985 and graded the stars. Made out VERY well on them.
  • Centering and flimsy box creates corner issues. Red border is tough.

That box looks super fresh - I'd crack it. To borrow from another board member...the juice is worth the squeeze.

  • I looked at the scan and it looks like the Reggie White card has a touch of white showing in the lower right corner. I checked the card and it was just a loose piece of paper. Here is a close up of the card without the paper.

Looks like 8s across the top and some shots at 9s on the bottom row with Kelly being a tweener 8/9. Not sure what they go for, but thanks for sharing! Cool looking cards!

You forgot one of the more important cards in that set. The Gary Clark. Popular card and goes in the Redskins registry. If it's nice, submit it. Same with Rozier (Heisman winner)
Isn't there and 85 Young as well?

Those all look pretty nice, I would submit them.
  • Here are the Mills, Hebert and Clark cards. Mills has decent centering, but there is a big fisheye at the top. Hebert has centering problems. The Clark card looks very nice. That one might be worth submitting.

  • If you're planning on selling, I'd grade only the Clark and Herschel (if you think it is a definite 9 with a shot at a 10). The rest look like 8s because of centering (except the Evans which won't sell as a 9) and you will lose money by grading.
  • Thanks CD. I was kind of thinking the same thing. However, I was planning to include the Kelly card if it looks like a 9 or better. Also I was thinking of sending in a few low pops such as: #2 (3 nines, no tens), #36 (0/0), #37 (2,0), #38 (1,1), #69 (3,0), #126 (1/0), Checklist (0,0). The ones I have have a good shot at 10's.

Very, very nice on both sides. This set may not come cheap but it's certainly a very well made one.

Centering killed ya, but it was well worth the thrill of the bust. Cut your losses and sell as a set cracked for scans on eBay.
  • Don't you think cards like this that are low pops and look like probable 9's and possible 10's (the Clark is probably no better than a 9) are worth a submission?

Well, I did send in a few of the 1985 USFL cards in the last special. They came out OK, but I did think a few had a good shot at 10's. The #37 Walls card is 1/3, the #38 White card is 1/2, and the check list is a 1/1. image Here are some scans.
