POP REPORTS ADDED TO REGISTRY SET LISTING

Hi, forgive me if this was discussed already, but I just noticed: the population report and number of higher pop coins has been added to the proof washingtons 1936-64. one benefit is that it shows what "better" coins are out there. cheers, alan mendelson

  • It's funny that you just posted this because I was about to do the same. The pop report info appears for all registered sets (at least all the ones I have). Pretty cool!

Technically, for type sets, the information is correct but a little misleading. I might have a PR69DCAM with -0- higher, but in another year there might be a PR70DCAM.

Also, if I list a PR68 without a Cam/DCam, the pop report only shows the number of coins higher without Cam/DCam designations.

I'm not sure if I would change anything though, I like it the way it is.

That's a great feature. Did someone suggest that, or did PCGS come up with this on their own? Great idea!

Semi you are correct in your observations about the pop numbers and the cam and dcam designations. another example:

I have a 1962 pr70 which shows as the highest pop. however, we know that there is a 1962 pr70dcam coin which is not reflected in the pop numbers in the registry listing.

the irony here, of course, is that my pr70 has a "discounted" value for the registry because it lacks the dcam designation.

I love this feature. You don't really have to pay for pop reports, just look up that certain year.

As I suggested was happening, PCGS was quietly just making this registry better and better. The addition of these new features (pops & # above) is absolutely terrific. Thanks, pcgs braintrust. It really is a great surprise. Thanks, again.
  • Very nice addition, you can use it to "target" the upgrades needed for your set without having to look up the series in the Pop Report (with the exceptions for DCAM/CAM/FBL/FS etc. already mentioned).

  • ALAN, I just noticed also I do however like the format in which your POP is your POP for that TYPE of coin. It makes some of us poor folks in PR69 with NONE Higher FEEL SPECIAL!!!!!!!!
Great JOB PCGS I always knew time will always tell. PCGS is ON IT!!!!!

  • Bravo! I was actually thinking a few days ago of posting a thread regarding including both the pop numbers and PCGS market prices in the set listings, since these are all tied together by the coin #.

The pop numbers are by far the most helpful addition, but it might be interesting to see the market value of your set as well.

I just looked myself, nice addition. It looks like I have a lot of room to improve. The fact is with 90% of my dimes I am very happy and will not try to upgrade at all.

A little mis-leading when it comes to FB,FH and FS coins that donot have the designation. My 28S Merc says there are only 2 better, but the FB coins were not considered. Anyway it is "Just Way Cool That PCGS Did This For Us Collectors" Take Care: Ken

Ive just given the new "pop charts" on the Registry listing a "second look," and unfortunately there are some errors in the way that the pop figures are listed that can make the info very misleading.

Let me give you an example:

I have a 1962 proof Washington in PR70 and the pop chart shows that there is Zero higher. I know this is not true because there is one PR70DCAM of this date. It appears that the category of "number higher" is only in relation to what you have in your set. I get a "zero higher" because there is no such thing as a PR71 coin.

    Now, consider another collector set:

Another collector has a 1962 PR69DCAM and the pop chart for his set shows One higher -- which is the PR70DCAM. However, the pop chart for his set fails to show the existence of other PR70 1962 quarters besides the one DCAM example that exists.

So, it appears that the pop chart and "pop higher" only relates to the example in your own set, and not to the existence of other coins with other designations outside the grade point.

Okay, still helpful, but I hope you understand this is not the same as looking at the PCGS pop guides.

That seems to me Alan the exact same way it is in the hard copy of the pops. In the case of the new additions to the Reg. set listings, you just can't view the line above or below that of your coin's catagory, like you can with the book. Isn't that right?
  • I think it is a super addition!!! Thanks to everyone that made this happen.

Really informative, and gives you a much better feel for your set. I love it. Thanks, PCGS!

I LOVE what PCGS has done with the populations!!!! I know there are flaws, especially given that I specialize in No Bands Mercurys and they are discounted 2 points for lacking the bands.

But looking at the populatioin reports, it makes my poor set look much better that its ranking. I love all my coins for what they are, especially given the obverse eye appeal and I will never have the big bucks for the FB coins.

Anyway this is one major coup for PCGS IMHO. Once more I am glad I joined the registry. Small guys can win in their own way.

My only point, is although I like the additional data, the page is starting to look a little busy. Maybe have the old page and then a link that says "show populations" or something. This way they could link them to the price guide too. If they add all of this info to one page, then it is just going to be too much info on one page.
