Come on it's part of their cultural heritage just like jazz and blues music.

If it was Tom Brady she would be calling for a hanging.

While she's at it, could she defend Rodney Harrisson as well?
  • She's off to a great start!

Whoopi has been a nimrod since long before anybody had even heard of Rosie. I believe she's one of the original inductees in the Nimrod Hall of Fame (along with Alan Alda, Ed Asner, Dan Rather and Rob Reiner).
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

    Don't forget Dubya and Rush!!!

I don't see that she's defending him. She's just stating that some people are brought up that way, but never really claims it's okay or that his upbringing justifies these actions. I don't think anyone can argue certain people may be raised this way. Some people are raised to think that fighting chickens is cool. What about those idiots who toss the little spears at the bulls before they enter the bullfight? I personally think all of these things are wrong and cruel, but some people are raised to think it's okay. And BTW, I never could stand her anyways so I'm not defending her.

  • Dirtmonkey - she doesn't directly defend him, but then she goes on to say that if it was someone from NYC then she'd feel different. It's a double standard so in effect she's defending him.

One thing I have noticed with regard to the issue of dogfighting is that it is pretty much divided along racial lines, at least where the media is concerned.. Whoopi is a talented actress, but her opinions have often been borderline ridiculous, IMO, and this is one of those cases. To suggest that such behavior is acceptable because a person is "brought up that way" is no better than Jimmy the Greek saying that blacks are better athletes because they are bred to be that way, too. I'd imagine that if a white person were to suggest that dogfighting was part of black culture and that a person like Vick was brought up in that culture, there'd be a media backlash against that person to be sure. There's a double standard at work in that regard.

Sure, she may be defending the culture but I don't see it as her defending him personally. I think the title is a bit misleading. Again, I do feel that there's areas where this is considered common (dogfighting). I'm not saying it's right or defending these idiots in any way. I'm simply saying if you're around it or have been raised to view dogs differently than as pets, I can see how that might change your thoughts on or perceptions of it.

Common does not make it acceptable, not to mention the gambling is also illegal. If Vick were not a black man, Whoopi would be on the other side of this.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • I work with a lot of black and hispanic co-workers, the vast majority think that dog fighting is no big deal. They don't condone the torture/ murder of the dogs however, but there is definite sympathy for him.

I never said it was acceptable. In fact, I've always said quite the opposite. I have always had dogs in my life. I think they're great. One of the two dogs I have now is the first dog that my wife and I picked out together. He's been the best dog I've ever had and protects us without any formal training. Everyone loves him. If my dog was lost and Vick or one of his other associates took him and used him to train their dogs in the ways I have seen reported, I'd seriously consider removing them from the map. I like my dogs more than I like most people. I don't care about the gambling aspect. Many people gamble illegally in some respect or another, but are just unaware of it or don't care. You'd be amazed at what's illegal when it comes to gambling. I don't appreciate the government telling me what I can do with the money I've already paid taxes on.

As far as Whoopi's comments being what they are because Vick is black, it's possible. But remember, Whoopi was humping Ted Danson so she likes the oreo cream and cookie equally image Again, she made some excuses for him but I don't see it as outright support. There's white people that have supported Vick as well. It's not only black people "protecting their own" as some claim. Again, Vick was wrong and if he killed one of my dogs, the punishment he'll be serving wouldn't be enough in my eyes. But as I said, I just think this article is misleading.

Unfortunately, the only thing we know that he beat out of those dogs is their life. I think you have to have a disconnect in your brain that would allow someone to kill animals over and over with their bare hands. Especially in such a violent manner. I do hunt. We can get into the positives and negatives or hunting, but I do it and that's that. But if I had to drop down out of trees and grab deer with my hands and break their necks or smash their heads in with a rock, I wouldn't be able to hunt anymore.
