1909 IH upgrade from PCGS MS66 to 67RD

1909 is the most common IH common date. But when you can get it bumped from 66RD to 67RD you hit major paydirt.
It becomes a pop 4/0 coin.

1909 PCGS MS66RD from the August 2006 Sig Sale.
1909 PCGS MS67RD from the current Long Beach Sale.

This is when you buy the coin and not the holder image

  • Nice pick up.

Definitely the same coin, and for once it doesn't look like the coin got worked on between holders.

  • Looks like a nice 66 but I don't care for the jaw line/cheek/chin chatter (for a 67 grade).

  • I agree, I think it looks better in a 66 holder.

  • What you see as "cheek chatter," I see as streaks of toning. The coin looks clean and nice to me!
    Nice acquisition.

I posted it here, on the Registry Forum, because I thought I'd get more interesting reactions.

You guys seem to be more accepting of this upgrade.

Is it a "Registry" thing, if you can get the upgrade you're worthy of it?

I thought PCGS was 'ridiculously tight' lately?

    Sure doesn't look like it.

That's what kept it out of the 68 holder image

I think it is at best a 66.

Between those obverse and rev hits and tics, toning streaks taking it on the "chin, general spotting and toning, I can think of lots of reasons this would not be my MS67.

Hmmm, a year or so to make the upgrade? That's a lot of resubmits imo.

Would any of you who thinks it is a 66 pay 66 money for it? I for one wouldn't, in fact I wouldn't want it period.

HI PAUL This coin was offered to myself and three other collestors for $21,000 in August of this year.I sold three 1909 Indian cents in August of this year in ms 66 red
for an average of $1,100 a coin.I already own a 1909 Indian cent in ms 67 red that I bought from Eagle Eye in 1997 for $2,000.I believe you have an image of my coin on your web site Coingallery.org.

Can I ask a stupid question?

How in the world does a coin like Blay's 7RD stay that beautiful for almost 100 years w/o turning even the slightest brown? I know nothing of RD Cents but would like to here some thoughts please?

    Very interested!

    Later, Paul.

    Paul,

If the coin is kept in a dry environment and not stored in a closed area with lots of documents, that's how. Intercept Shield boxes with the coins in the specially treated capsules will keep them looking great nowadays, but Intercept Shield is a recent development. Of couse, of the coin has been "improved" chemically. nothing will stop the color changes that will occur. The coin is ruined for posterity.

    Great question.

The paranoia about RD copper is such a load of crap.

You said it best with How in the world does a coin like Blay's 67RD stay that beautiful for almost 100 years w/o turning even the slightest brown

This coin survived 100 years, is now encapsulated, and some collectors expect it to turn brown in the next decade...

    Don't hold your breath...

nothing like the protection of the "original skin" mess with it and the coin is fair game for color change.image
