china coin help

Can anyone tell me if this is a 20 cash coin from Hupeh Province? It is 35 mm in diameter. Thanks for any help.

Yo, I feel your pain! Again, a hint: go to photobucket.com and join (and very, very free and easy).

Download any coin image from any source on your computer (or anywhere else) to your photobucket album account and then simply right click copy on the image code ( under the image - it will present itself automatically) and then directly paste into your message text, easier than typing! You will have your image regardless of size!

As to your coin, a twenty cash from Hupeh Province in the 19th century Krause is not listed. I checked my 32nd edition of 20th century Krause and there is only one: Y#11J 1906 20 cash: $100 VG, $250 Fine, $375 VF, $625 XF. Copper, Ruler is Kuang Hsu. Obv inscription: T'ai Ch'ing Tung-pi. Reverse: Dragon. Rev legend: Kuang-Hsu Nien-tsao, TAI-CHING-TI-KUO... struck at Ching (Chingchow).

I hope you got it my man! By the way, 35mm would be the correct size (based on measuring the Krause image which is actual size in this case).

PS: you could spend hours, days, and weeks interpreting symbols, etc, go blind, confused, outraged, hopeful, psychotic, and still not be sure. That's why certain personas here are so very valuable (Satootoko, Sumnom please rise and bow) but without the image there is no hope.

Please PM me so we can get square on the Photobucket image thing, eh?

John, to post images straight into the post from Photobucket, copy and paste the link under the picture in Photobucket in the "IMG Code" window (see below) into your post:

Hmmmm, obverse needs to be to be rotated 90 degrees to the right, but it looks like it might be... What do the experts say? Unfortunately the reverse scan is not very helpful. Nor might I say is the same image from Krause...

  • yep--comparing it to Y#21--looks like it-has the six waves under the dragon and the dot between KUO and COPPER. Drats--was really hoping it was Y#11j. Oh Well--thanks again for all the info guys

    1909 20 wen (cash), Y21.

    I concur.
  • Hi olmanjon, this is a pretty common one. Issued in 1909 by the last emperor XuanTong of Qing dynasty, minted by the Board of Revenue and Population of the central government.

  • Thanks for the info everyone. The older chinese coins are interesting, but not being able to read chinese does make it harder to figure out which one you have. There are so many varieties, with just sutle differences. Think you have something rare and turns out tobe common.
