1976 Sets

I have been reading posts for about a year now and I started thinking about starting and registering a set with PSA. I was born in 1976 and thought that may be a good place to start. I have always leaned to baseball for some reason, but my collection started in 1988.
My ideas are:
1. I would like my set not to loose value.
2. I would like an obtainable set in high 8's or 9's with the dream of 10's in it.
3. I would like a set that has some meaning to it (which is why I went with 1976 for my birthday).
Maybe I should have been born in 1975, seems to be a lot better set!
Also I never collected basketball so the 1976-1977 Topps set doesn't interest me except for the fact it is such a great looking set.
Any advice would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks
