New member free submission question

Cards submitted must have declared value of $500 or less. I will be sending a '68 ryan thinking it may be a 8 but probably is a 7. If I declare the value as $495 ( +/- value of a 7) but it ends up getting a 8, do they bill me for the difference between a regular and super express ( ie $55-$15=$40). Does the declared value I put on the card affect the grade the evaluator assigns?

  • The declared value is for insurance purposes. Has nothing to really do with the actual card value.

    No, You will be OK..
  • I declare everything $.05.

    Perhaps this is stupid.
  • Go ahead and declare the 7 value. They're tough on that card, so if you think it merely has a chance at an 8, it's gonna get assigned a 7 anyway.

In any case, they're not nitpicky about the "declared value/grading level." Oh, they'll crack down if you try to submit an original Babe Ruth or a 52 Mantle on a voucher, but they otherwise seem to exercise common-sense judgment.

  • I guess my question is whether there is an awareness of the BV by the grader and whether he sees that I put a value consistant with a 7 and figures...heck, if sender figures it's not an 8...why should I?... Looking at the submission page it sure implies that there will be an add on charge if it graded 8 ( which of course is fine with me) I have several nice cards that would be more than the $500 threshhold if they graded my optimistic opinion. I would be happy to pay any extra for a higher grade...just don't want grader to know what I put as value and have it downgraded...
  • Somewhere in their FAQs... might even be in the video clip they have... they show that graders only see the cards and the labels stuck to them. Those labels should only have your member #, the sub #, and the card number. One person enters the cards into the system, checks to make sure the sticky labels are right, and handles billing. Then the graders get the cards. After grading, the cards are slabbed and someone else matches the cards back up with the order, and also enters the grades into the system.

Graders don't know submitters' identities or how much they paid.

Unless of course it's all a bold-faced lie, but I'm not THAT cynical... yet.
