Why do you think this card sold soooooo cheap? (SMR: $2750 --- Sold for: $1117)

SMR has a suggested price for this Hall of Famer of $2750. Yet this ebay/andymadec auction, the card sold for only $1117.

I just missed at $1100.

From an investment point of view, was $1117 a steal, or am I missing something here? image

Opinions appreciated!

TIA

EDIT: Let's see, a Napoleon Lajoie, circa: 1904, Hall of Famer, PSA 9, 40% of SMR, just what am I missing here?

Though Nap Lajoie is certainly a recognizable character, maybe the card type itself was a little too obscure to bring SMR value. Just a guess. Wrong market for the card, or not the right lookers.

Could be because of the holiday weeknd. A lot of people are out of town and away from computers.

You might ask where the SMR value came from. Sometimes they just project out what the price "should" be, with little real market data. And all the other reasons people mentioned.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • I doubt the holiday market has anything to do with it. That is a very common misconception. I had my best weekend in a long time this Sunday sales were about 400.00 and had a 100% sell through on 15 listings.

I think it has to do more with the obscurity than the timing.

I've seen a lot of collectibles selling for substantial premiums this weekend. Kind of a bummer, I only purchase when I can find items selling at 75% of recent eBay sells. Kind of the rule I purchase by, except on individual cases when I know I won't be able to find the item for awhile and it's a "must" have.

The last 8 of this card sold for 1200. 6 months ago. I think it just slipped under the radar on a holiday weekend, I've gotten quite a few like that in the last few days. Many of the best deals I've ever gotten were on labor day weekend over the last 5 years.
I don't know the buyer of this one, but I'll bet it is someones buying id. I'm sure we'll see it offered again soon.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • The 1904 and 1906 fan craze sets are not as popular as the SMR price might suggest. I've routinely seen them sell for well under SMR. The 1906 Joe Kelley in PSA 9 sold for about 900 (SMR 2000) I believe back 6 months ago.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

    It's all about demand.
  • A complete set with 9 PSA 10's WITH the box sold for 65,000 not too long ago.
There are a bunch of complete sets in the box floating around yet.
Other than a player collector or team collector, I couldnt imagine too many people trying to piece this set together in high grade from scratch...

well it's a playing card not a traditional card and it doesn't have alot of eye appeal. I could see it flying under the radar if not many high end set collectors were watching or team/player set guys as well. For that price I could get alot of nice T206's.

You aren't missing anything. Seems like you were right around the number since you were only willing to bid $1,110 for a card you knew had an SMR value of $2,750. You say why did it sell for only 40% of SMR while I say why did you only bid 40% of SMR?
