Lets figure out the grade of my 1952 Yogi Berra - Results are in

I'm thinking about submitting this card for grading, but I'm trying to figure out what I can expect. I think it is a lock PSA 5, with a very good chance at a PSA 6, and would like to hear what you guys think as well. Also, if anyone with VCP can let me know some recent PSA 6 sales and some recent PSA 5 sales (just in case), that would be great too. There is a slight tilt, and it measures right on the money. I think mine is better than this PSA 5 from a recent eBay auction. Here are the scans:

that's one sweet looking card - good luck with it whatever grade you get

  • Hey Nam,

I agree with your assessment. Looks like a Lock for a 5, might be able to pull a 6 on the right day...

Nice card overall, great eye appeal...image

    I think solid 6, myself.

I think the corners will keep it a 5, a 4 on a bad day (which seems to happen more often than not lately). Hope I'm wrong.

    From VCP

    Avg PSA 5 288.24 (last 5 sales)
Last sales, in descending chronilogical order-
    390. 296. 224. 300. 230. 203. 361. 227. 270. 406. 255. 181. 227. 2880. 259. 235. 327. 331. 382.

    Avg PSA 6 493.00 (last 5 sales)
Last sales, in descending chronilogical order-
    724. 356. 560. 356. 469. 428. 312. 406. 321. 435. 431.

Ha Ha chaz is still mad at me because I corrected him in another thread when he called everyone 2nd graders and then typed Mooses, not knowing that the word Moose is already plural. Finish 1st grade first chaz then come back and grade the card. Also, have enough respect for yourself to capitalize the first letter of your name Jagoff.

It's not even a PSA 4 if Mr. Magoo is the grader, but thanks for the VCP info Griffins. Much appreciated.

I think a PSA 6 is way too much of a stretch for that card.

Recently folks have been complaining about there grades..............maybe this is part of the problem. From the scan that I see here there is no way that this Berra card could grade out as a PSA 6. Anyone who expects such should perhaps look at their way they are submitting their cards and their grading criteria.

I hope I am wrong and mean no disrespect......

Listen, you little sissy, I don't even remember you, so there. Don't be pissed cause I gave you an honest assessment of your card. I have sent enough cards to PSA to know what I am doing. You are a novice if you think that card will come back higher than a 4. chaz

That's not PSA 6. It's PSA negative 6. In fact, it's just been downgraded to PSA -12
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
    For what it's worth nam, I think 80% of the time it's a 5 and 20% of the time it's a 4. Don't be mad.
  • PSA 4, possible 5 since the eye appeal and centering is good. Maybe they will cut you some slack on the corners. Nice card, regardless of the grade.

Sorry - no chance for a PSA 6...a probable 5 with an outside chance for a 4.

I think it's nicer than the 5 that was on ebay but I think that was a low end 5 on ebay.

It hurts my head to read the auctions that the seller of that 5 listed. All caps, typos, bad spelling, no clue at all about punctuation. I wonder how hard he had to think to come up with

THIS YANKEES PITCHER IS ONE OF THE FEW PITCHERS THAT PITCH IN TEN OF THE WORLD SERIES GAMES THAT HE WON FOR THE YANKEES.

    ebay link

I'm going out on a limb and guessing he's the ONLY pitcher that pitched in all 10 of the world series games that he won.

Good luck with it, Nick. I hope you get at least a 5.

a likely psa5 but possible 4. dont think it can pull a 6.

    I think it's a 50/50 4 or 5. Either grade wouldn't surprise me. A 6 would.

i own one that looks exactly...i mean EXACTLY like it...it got a 5. i think yours is either 4 or 5...depends on the day and the grader...im sure if u keep resubbing you'd eventually get that into a 5 holder. Doubt 6 though..just doesnt have clean enough corners.

    70% of the time it's a 4 and 30% it's a 5. Not possible that it's a 6 because of the layering at the corners.

    That is a nice card, I don't see why it don't have a shot at a 6 ?
Definitely better than some 5's I have seen for sure .

Far as surface wear , I can't tell and does PSA grade according to the color fading ?

    I hope it rocks a 6 , you'll definitely be pulling at least a 5 , the 4 ?

    I just don't see it ever being a 4 .

Thanks for all the input guys, thats why I posted it here.

I should be sending it to PSA this week on the 13/5 special, so hopefully i'll have the grades and the card back in a relatively short period of time. I will be sure to post the results (when the card is in hand) for all to see. Thanks, and feel free to continue commenting.

    10% - 4
    85% - 5
    5% - 6

Probability says it's twice as likely to be a four than a six, but I've seen brutalized creased fours so I'm very confident it will sit in a five holder. Unless there is a wrinkle somewhere.

I'll be waiting to see that that card comes back a PSA 4 or less right? And you will show it right? If it comes back a "5", which I would be shocked at, I will congratulate you. If it comes back a "4" or less, I will tell you better luck next time. chaz

I would put it at PSA 5. Would not surprise me if you got a 4, but I would be surprised if it graded 6.

I think 5 with a slight chance at a 4. Corners are layered and looked even creased in the picture. Great eye appeal and looking at the VCP prices some 5's outsell 6's, I am betting eye appeal is the reason.

Bottom line- whatever the grade is, that is a great card to own.
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,187 ✭✭✭✭✭
It looks properly graded based on the corner wear. Having said that, there are weak 4's and 4's with strong eye appeal. This card certainly falls in the latter category. I'd much rather own that card than some of the 1952T 7's and 8's I see with extreme tilts or borderline centering.
