Just back from my local B&M shop...would you say anything???
resized.jpg)
I just recently re-started a Morgan Dolar date set after selling off most of my collection this past April. I'm now trying to put together an AU50 to MS62-ish set. As I was looking through the boxes of Morgan dollars I noticed that the prices went up about $10 per coin for AU to low-MS coins... OK...I guess I can live with a price increase. But as I further inspect each piece I notice several with what looks like fingerprints! This leads leads me to more closely inspect each one. Now I notice what looks like dip residue and it's not on just a few... it's on alot of them. In fact, One of the pieces I sold back in April was an 1884-O with some fairly dark toning. While I'm not 100% certain about that particular piece, I think I saw it for sale and now about 70% of the toning has been dipped off and it really doesn't look all that appealing anymore.
So my question to the group is: would you say anything? This particular shop usually doesn't have what I normally collect... Large Cents...VF-AU IHCs... and US Type for my 7070. Morgan Dollars was about the only thing they routinely stock that held my interest...that and [when I have extra money] $5 gold pieces. Unfortunately, they're the only shop in town. I suppose I could just go in and look. Hopefully they'll get more pieces in and perhaps the odd piece for my type set but I'feel like I'm in a quandry...thoughts?

Me? No, I wouldn't. I'd just buy whatever coins (if any) were up to my standards and forget about the rest. If the coins are dipped, the dealer obviously knows it and is okay with it. Unless he asks why I don't like the coins (and assuming that's the reason I passed on them), I don't see any point in getting into a potential confrontation over the issue- it's not likely to be any more productive than criticizing his grading.
The name is LEE!
Yep.
HOW I said it would depend on the person and how I felt about them.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
edited to add, Like was said above, only pick what you like, look, and move on.

<< <i>Why bother? The dealer is doing exactly what he pleases. >>
It depends on the dealer...you are right in that they will do what they please but some of them may not be thinking anyone likes undipped coins.
My local dealer, when I went in to look at toned Roosies for my son, said "oh really? I normally just dip them all to make them white...that's what people around here like. I'll start keeping some toned ones for you to look at".
So, sometimes, saying something may help. Again, depends HOW it is said as well as HOW it is received.

I agree. The dealer is free to do whatever he wants to his coins.
Just buy what you like and pass on what you don't.

I would, and have.
But I say is as a question, " I really like this coin, but do you think it was dipped?" or cleaned, or whatever.
At the local B&M, which deals mostly in common circ. coins, the dealer has always verified to me what I thought of the coin.
Sure they sell cleaned coins, unfortunately they don't list that on the holder, but all you need to ask.
The answer to my question is just as important as what they have to sell. Are they there to help or RIP?
forgot to rinse them after.
Just ask him if he has any natural coins, let him know you know they're dipped.
On the other hand at 10.00, I would buy every morgan he has for sale, put them on ebay and
get 13.00 to 14.00 a piece and use the profit to buy a nice slabbed coin
