How does this type of bidding happen?

There's a Bob Griese rookie card up for auction (LINK) where the high bidder placed a high bid of $80. That same bidder subsequently placed four more bids, all of which raised the current bid which is now at 199.99. No one else but this guy has bid since his high bid of $80 was placed.

I thought when you were high bidder and placed a bid on top of yourself that all it did was raise your ceiling bid. I've never seen it raise the actual, current bid price. Does anyone know if Ebay has changed something here?

The person you are talking about made an original high bid of $65.00, was outbid, and decided to place a higher maximum bid of at least $199.99 (current price). When you see his/her seller ID sequentially like that, it represents times the person was bid against, and subsequently his/her high bid was not beaten and he/she had an automatic rebid. EBay has been doing this for awhile, but I believe at one time I remember bid history showing every individual bid, even if it wasn't a high bid. I guess that's the best way to look at it, those the bid history only shows high bids, doesn't show failed attempts to outbid someone's maximum.

I believe this is a no reserve auction and that eBay has changed the style of its bid history profiles.

  • This happened because there was a reserve which wasn't met early on, so the bidder kept bidding until they met the reserve.

If you look at the bid history page, you will see that it says "reserve met."

I stand corrected. I hate this new layout, I would have never seen that without being told.

  • With this being an auction that started with a reserve, that explains it. Thanks
