Thurman Munson Baseball

I am not a collector but have been sitting on something I got as a kid.

I have a Thurman Munson autograph on the "sweet spot" of an official Lee Macphail American league baseball. The Ball has yellowed over time

It was signed in 1977 at a public signing at the Nanuet mall in Nanuet, NY

Graig nettles signature is on another part of the ball. What could this be worth and what steps would I take to authenticate it? preserve it? etc.

Thank you

Scott

The Nettles sig actually might devalue the ball. Single signed Munson balls sell for $2500 - $5000 depending on whiteness, quality of the signature, etc.

Post a scan or pic. We like to see this kind of stuff here.
  • The ball is in NY (I live in SF) I'll be back in mid sept. I'll defintely have to take a picture and post.

BTW, Can you get rid of other sigs, or is this too dangerous?

    Thank you for the reply

I don't think you should mess with it image

Yes, I agree, leave it alone. Even if you remove the Nettles sig, evidence of it will remain, and if the ball is yellow you'll really screw up the ball. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but value-wise, a single signed ball is king. Still Munson is in great demand.

A Munson signature is indeed a valuable sig..........There is no way that the nettles sig would devalue the Munson signature.

When you get the ball, do spend whatever money it takes to have the Munson ( and nettles) sigs authenticated by the most legitimate authenticater out there.........whatever the cost..

The fact that the Munson signature can be displayed as a single signature (sweet spot no less), the Nettles autograph won't affect the value at all. Don't be tempted to go to that guy that "erases" signatures off baseballs (that certainly will devalue it).

    Good Luck with it!

  • Thank a lot for all of your feedback. I may ask my brother-in-law to take some pictures and e-mail this weekend. This way you'll have a better idea of what we are looking at.

I also have/had personalized photo with his sig and my name that is somewhere in my folks attic. This may have dissappeared among several housecleanings
  • Retrieved the ball last weekend. I hope the attachements work

  • Apparently I can't get the file attached. It says i'm over sspace limit. Anyway I can post these?
  • send me the pix i will post them for you . I also am a Munson collector and have a ball signed by him . JSA GETS 75 TO AUTHENTICATE A MUNSON SIG BUT YOU EITHER HAVE TO SEND IT IN THE MAIL OR GO TO A SHOW WHERE THEY WILL AUTHENTICATE ON THE SPOT. SEND PIX TO JOEWOOWOO@AOL.COM

    Wow KO

I'm looking forward to seeing the ball!

I would consider sending it to PSA/DNA.

And there is a company who can expertly remove Nettles' sig - but it can be detected by PSA.

Here's the only thing Munson I have signed...

    image

It was sent from the Yanks in the late 70s - my guess? Possible auto pen - tho it doesn't have the characterist "start/stop" ink pooling of an autopen - the end of the sig "falls off the pic" - more indicative of a personal sig - I guess eventually I should send it to PSA or JSA for authentication.

If not a collector - why not consider consigning it after authentication?

    hey stone,

I have a couple of picture exactly like that except they are of nettles and dent. I wrote the yankees in the mid 70's I think. They are both auto penned. I am not saying that yours is an autopen but it seems unlikely that it is real.if interested in seeing them, I ll dig them up.
  • I have saw quite a few pictures just like yours Stone including a couple Munsons.Everyone I have ever came across has came back autopen or clubhouse signature.Does the ink bleed through the back of the photo on yours? Most I have saw showed bleeding through the back if it was autopen but not on the clubhouse sigs.

    I agree.

I have the same ones - and the Nettles is exactly the same on all of them.

So, I think you're correct - it would be nice if it weren't but doubtful.

Clubhouse sig is probably what it is.

No one was signing anything with all the requests they got back then.

Those Yankee photos like the Munson use a printing process, not autopen. The reason you have "bleed through" is that the pictures, when stacked, probably transferred to the back of the picture above it. Similar team postcards with facsimiles from the late 1970s to early 1980s exist for the Mets, Phillies & Royals. Some of the Phils ones often get sold as real but if you have two of them you can see they are exactly the same.

I think your are correct. it seems as if they are "stamped" into the picture and then they were stacked on each other.
