Without a picture, just by the four names, I would guess a mixed Hollywood Stars/ Los Angeles Angels from about 1952 or 53. What league is stamped on the ball?

The best way to get pictures of signed balls is on a scanner...if you have a ball cube holder it makes it even easier as you can just scan the six sides. From the pics you provided though, I can work with a little. I am not able to narrow down the year with available reference materials on hand, but my best guess is 1952-54 Hollywood Stars, as Bobby Bragan was manager those years and some of the players seem to have been on the team at that time. Of course it's possible the ball was signed over a period of time, and not just one year. The good news is that most of these guys were major leaguers at one time. The bad news is that there doesn't appear to be any rare of highly valued signatures among what I can see so far.

    Very cool ball though.

Here are the names I can see, if you can get me a better pic of the other panels I might be able to get more.

Label - Frank Kelleher, Dale Long, Earl Malone(?)

Under "Trade Official" label - Monty Basgall, Bobby Bragan, Chuck Stevens

Panel - Willard Ramsdell, Paul LaPalme, Dick Cole, Chuck Barrett, John O'Donoghue(?)

If you can post clear pictures of the other panels and sweet spot I can go on...

Wow ! you have some damn good eye sight , I can't make out any names on that baseball at all for certain . . .

I just take pics of my baseballs with a good digital cam , not holding the baseball { Because of movement } of all the panels and they seem to come out OK .

    I never wanted to expose any of my baseballs to the kind of light given off by the scanner , I'm not sure what kind of light it uses , so was never willing to take any chances , Most if not all of my high dollar baseballs never see the light of day { 32 yankees - 39 Yankees- 51 Yankees -and 58 Yankees }

I'm just a freak like that though, many people have told me never to expose them to any kind of UV light and I just take that as gospel, because it kinda makes sense to me .

I would love to see some quality scans of that baseball if you get the chance .
  • I'll be back around 6' o'clock w/ scans..THX...so much...BH...actually, I'll take some more pics now,in case you want to work on it today....then tonight I can scan the ball if necessary.....
  • Man!!,...your good....here's some more...imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

***hopefully with 9 more, we can make a little more progress!...THX again.....

The sweet spot looks like George O'Donnell and "George "Red" Munger.
  • Your awesome!!!!...what are the two that look like they start with ..Lyn??... and the ..... O'Reily..????
  • MooseDogMooseDog Posts: 1,948 ✭✭✭
pomobileclk got the two on the sweet spot.

Under Chuck Stevens is Red Lynn who played in the majors in spots in 1939-44 so he might have been and old minor leaguer or a coach if this is a 50s ball. He died in 1977 so not the easiest signature to find but not extremely rare.

You need a better picture of the panel that has the "original horsehide" label.

On the horsehide panel the bottom 3 are Bill Moisan ?? LA Angels, Les Layton LA Angels and Don Dahlke Hollywood Stars
  • OK...great job guys!....we have 17 names confirmed (or close to it)....There are 20 total....so ,-3 left!.....let me know if you need more scans....I'll try to determine where the missing 3 are ,..but I think one is "Chick Pi.e.s.t?...,J,,,,L...O'ri..ly.?,....and name under 'Les Layton...which is difficult!...
  • pomobileclkpomobileclk Posts: 224 ✭✭✭
The name under Les Layton is Don Dahlke. Chick may be Marino "Chick" Pieretti but I don't think he played in LA or Hollywood in 1952 or 53. There was a John O'Neil playing for Hollywood in 1952.

I think pomobileclk has the best line on those last three. They might have been non-major leaguers and I don't have any Hollywood Stars reference material to look them up. Maybe someone has Sporting News Baseball Guides from those years and can give us a hand.

Sorry can't see the name on the other ball you have there. Try taking a pic without the flash.
  • Trying a better? picture!....Only "2"!! left...they are both next to Frank Kelleher, to his right hand side..... One looks like..Le.. P.os.e....and other LR.......RB...an...f....e..f.f.....(tough one).....imageimage
  • pomobileclkpomobileclk Posts: 224 ✭✭✭
Maybe Les Peden and Leon Brinkopf of the Angels
  • Awesome!!...I think thats it!! wow!...I think??....what to do now?.....wanna buy it?....THX for great help you guys...BH..
  • MooseDogMooseDog Posts: 1,948 ✭✭✭
I think he got it. Here's Peden:

And here's Brinkopf from an eBay listing:

You're welcome...these are always a lot of fun.
  • Have any ideas where and how much to sell it for??.....
  • So can we now determine if it is a '52-'54'?...PCL....?....Hollywood Stars?.........

Looks like it has both Stars and Angels...It's not going to bring much cash, given the lack of "big" names or rare signatures. A 1952 ball in nicer condition with bolder signatures sold for $225 at an auction in 2005 against an estimate of $100.

With a mixture of names I'd take a wild guess at a value of somewhere between $100-200 but it might be hard to locate a buyer.

You can contact any of the big auction houses to get an idea of what it might be worth too.
