Should I rip my 1951 Ringside boxing packs?

I have a few 1951 Topps Ringside five-cent packs that are GAI graded. I auctioned one off on ebay a couple of weeks ago and it got a very dissapointing price. Should I rip the others? image

It is beyond me how anyone cannot rip open any pack let alone a vintage one! What if there is a crisp Marciano card in there just waiting to pop out!

    NOOOOOO!
It's worth more than the sum of its parts- expecting to win the lottery by pulling a centered, unstained card with sharp corners is a long shot.
What did the pack go for John?

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

The pack went for just over $900 on ebay. I bought two from Murphy for 2400, but one does have a good guy showing. image

I agree with Anthony. If the market is soft now, hold onto it until the market turns. The populations of high grade vintage cards will continue to go up over time. The amount of legitimate unopened material won't increase. If PSA ever gets on the ball and gets the pack registry set up, I believe the market will accelerate for graded packs just like it did for individual cards when the set registry was created.

It went for $900. I've seen a few go for the high $700's, so I think you did pretty well.

  • What does the 1951 Ringside set book for? I'm thinking about purchasing a set that is missing 6 cards. Dennis

it would be nice to see the pack registry up and running asap, then all the gai one could be crossed over to psa and hopefully put them out of biz on the pack grading!!!!

Just want to add my vote for NOT opening... not just because of the slim chances of pulling something valuable enough to make it worth while financially, but also because it's just cool that there are still unopened packs of these out there... I'd like to see it stay that way for as long as possible.

But if you do decide to rip... you gotta post some scans! image

He really doesnt have to rip since the pack has a Murphy SP staring through the wrapper.
Cant really do any better than that....

    Dennis,
An ex set usually goes for about 1200-1500. If you take out the two biggies (Marciano and Murphy) it sells for well under 1000.

The pack has two panels of two cards, so four cards.

Actually......I do have a pack with a Murphy showing. I bought it from BBCE this past spring at the Reading EPSCC show.

so you can ony see 2 of the 4 cards that are in pack right?, just the front 2,or can you hold up and see what is on the backs too, alot of the old packs were kinds see thru lol, i dont have any anymore lol, last oldest pack i openened was a 75 topps, with bad centering i should kept it slabbed lol, but that was before psa started slabbling packs,id trust them a whole lot more!,being very picky is better than slabbing anything a 10 ,kinda like all those great bccg cards lol, im kinda leary of gai after opening a 76 pack and getting 6 75 topps cards, no gum, and wax seal was broke, now that quality control right there!
