Do ANY Modern Coin Hypsters Have The Guts To Say That ANY Of The Coins They Are Selling You Today Wi

down in value in the near future (i.e. 3 months - 2 years) due to pop inflation? image

1999-S Close AM Lincoln is one great example if not the poster child.

Everyone that agrees, post a coin whose pop was dramatically lower (50% or more) and whose price was dramatically higher (50% or more) 1-2 years ago.

I remember seeing a 1982-D Washington Half Dollar in a MS69 back in the day when the pop was <12 sell for $5,000.00 on TT. My mouth hit the floor. What are they now about $350? I have no idea, but they are not $5K Did a search and found it!

I sold a 2005-D Lincoln Business Strike MS67 on ebay in late 2005. The bidding was started at face value, $0.01. The coin sold after a 7-day auction for $0.01 +$3.85 shipping (buyer opted NOT to insure the package).

The same coin sold on ebay in Aug 2007 for $15.06 + $5.00 shipping. You do the math.

Classic coins went through the same downward spiral as populations increased in the 1989-1996 era. Coins that used to be pop 5 became pop 10 or pop 20. That changes everything if there are only 10-20 people building sets. And those same effects are still being seen on classics as their pops inexorably increase. Modern coinage will not be exempted.

I remember purchasing a pop 1 PCGS MS67 1934 Washington quarter for $1000 in the 1988-89 market. The coin stayed pop 1 while I owned it. There were like 30 MS66's behind it. The pops in 2005 were 233/51. Still, that was one wopper of a toner 1934 quarter that did not lose any value. But with some severe head hits it would not upgrade to 68 today imo. That was the most gorgeous Washy I ever did see.

RB - I often brainstorm with collectors or dealers on which coins I believe have gotten ahead of themselves (I spoke with 3 separate board members on the very subject for close to 2 hours in the past day). Sometimes I am right, sometimes I am wrong. But, I would have equally no interest in stating on your thread which coins are "likely to go up" or "likely to go down". Neither way - sorry. Wondercoin

  • Mitch,

When was the last time you advised someone not to buy a coin you had for sale because you thought that the price would be lower in the future? image
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,974 ✭✭✭✭✭
Roger: Last time, about 7 hours ago to a board member. Not "advised" - just suggested they might not be happy next month with the direction the coin might take in my humble opinion (and making it clear I could be totally wrong as it was just my opinion). A few months back my son had one of the low pop GW Dollars in MS67 and he had the opportunity to sell it for around $900 (a decent profit for him and he wanted to upgrade his photography equipment). I suggested to him that he sell the coin, which he did. Within 30 days it resold for close to $4,000 at auction. They go both ways - the day I stop making mistakes is the day I won't be able to respond to you here on the boards.

Anybody paying 4000 for a GW in ANY grade is just plain NUTS!

    They are ALL worth $1.00!!!!

Dimeman: I thought I was giving him good advice on the sale. Interestingly, if the coin appeared for sale tomorrow, I suspect it could sell for upwards of $5,000+

While $4k may be nuts for a 2007 dollar coin, I respectfully disagree that they are all worth $1.

If you are including the modern Eagles in your post then I would say that you are dead wrong. Eagles rock and the price has been going up since 1986. Hop on or be left in the dust. Or in the case of the classics, in the rust. image

I'm not sure where you were paying that much for that coin. I bought mine in 1999 for $125 + $5 shipping according to my records. The current PCGS price guide shows $195 and the only one currently available on eBay is listed for $220. So it looks like a $95 or 76% gain on my investment.

My advise is to buy smart no matter what coins you collect and it can pay off and if you are collecting because you love the coins then does it really matter? image

    $4,500 G. Washington Dollar

Congrats to Jerry on this recent sale. This is the pop 13 "p" mint coin. I "recommended" to my son, Justin, that he sell his pop 3 "d" mint coin for around $900 a few months back - figuring he did OK at that level. Looks like that D coin could now be a $6,000 - $7,000 ++ coin now just 60-90 days later? Insanity? No argument out of me - just a good example of how you never can tell for sure which coins are "likely" to crash down in price. Some go up (way up) and some go down (way down).

P.S. I have now made it a personal goal to get Justin back his Washington Dollar in MS67 by slabbing one. Watch the pops rise for MS65 and MS66 coins in the meantime (my last submission batch of 250 coins yielded -2- MS66 coins as the best in the lot)!

Here's an example of a modern I've seen sink in "price guides".

    63 P Lincoln in MS66RD.

1st of the year it had a PCGS value of $185.00 after dropping from, I believe, $220.00.

    Now it's at $125.00.

Thanks for the note. I assume the OP was trying to put all modern coin dealers in the "hypster" bucket with that label.

Which 70DCAMS are you talking about? I see good strength in 2007 PCGS PR70 DCAM Buffalos. GW Dollar PR70DCAMS seem to have bottomed in Aug and I just sold 2 today for 50% above the lows.
  • I have to come to Wondercoins defense too...He has steered me away from a few modern issues before..i know very little about moderns and am so an "oldtimer"..doing mostly seated stuff now..but i do believe there is money to be made if you have an interest in moderns and more impotantly a good reputable modern dealer...just like the classic stuff...
