Is this Cal Ripken auto authentic? Share your opinions...

I purchased this card from a binder of autographed cards from a local dealer back in 1990. I probably spent no more than $15 on it as I was fairly young and didn't have much money. The dealer is no longer in business as a brick & mortar store, but still runs a monthly show locally. If it's not authentic, it's okay...I was a kid and whatever happened 17 years ago can stay in the past. More importantly, if there's a chance that it's actually authentic, I'll be sending it in to PSA/DNA soon to get their opinion and have it slabbed. Let me know what you all think...

I would say no. I have an auto from his rookie season and it looks almost identical to the autos you see of his today. I also have an autograph from the late 90's and it's very similar to that as well. In my opinion, this auto looks to "dragged out" if that makes sense. The one absolute constant in his autograph has been the "C" in Cal and this one JDLR (just doesn't look right)

List it with a high opening bid and do PSA/DNA's Quick Opinion service and see what they say. I've done it with a Mantle and it worked like a charm.

I think this is the era Ripken auto which was being forged - this is 82/83' time frame

Thanks for the opinions, everyone. It was what I figured, but thought I'd ask some of the more well informed. The story behind the binder of autos is that the guy would hang out at the hotels where visiting teams stayed and after games at the ballpark and then sold them at his shop. Needless to say, having aged a few years since then, I wouldn't make this mistake again.

If I remember correctly, I believe I came up with the extra money for the card by selling the guy a 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas rookie for $5 right when it started to get those up arrows next to it in Beckett. image Those were the days...

    Thanks again, guys...I appreciate it.

  • His early signatures from the 80s are slightly different on the letter J for junior. There is no loop on the bottom part of the J.
