Action Packed FB 24 kt gold....

I remember these being about 1 per box inserts, yet there are guys selling 10ct. lots of 1991 stars like Rice, Sanders and Elway. Does anybody know the story on these?

Yeah, but I can't see guys having 10 ct lots of anything that is one per box unless they got them backdoor or when the company went out of business. This would be like someone having a stockpile of Clemens and Ripken 1995 Select Artist's Proofs or 1993 Stadium Club 1st day issues.

I'm just curious as to where these mass quantities came from.
  • They had 24 kt gold packs, but not sure which years.

Not sure why some sellers have so many either. They were a tough pull as I recall. I have a few stars of them (Montana, Marion, Rice, Emmitt) from '91 Action Packed gold. I was going to try grading them soon too.

Think some were maybe back doored? It wouldn't surprise me at all since Upper Deck did this all the time on supposely tough pulls during this same era.

OT- anyone ever read the book 'Card Sharks'? It's about the early days at Upper Deck. How that company was started and what shenanigans went on behind closed doors at that company. Great read if you're a new card buyer/seller. It will open your eye's to the so-called limited edition stuff of the new card market.

ping- Those were different. Those were 1992 24kt MINT packs which had cards that were entirely convered in gold and sold on the Home Shopping Network. I think they were $100 or $200 a pack. The ones I'm talking about are the version of the regular card with the Action Packed logo in 24 kt. gold and were seeded in regular packs at one per box. I remember I was all pumped up when I pulled Steve Emtman in 1992 when he was the #1 overall pick.

bender- Card Sharks was a good read. At this point it doesn't surprise me at all what the card companies will do. How many 89 UD Griffey's do you think there are out there compared to the other cards in the set? 3x? 5x? 10x?
  • They could have bought them up over time in larger collections or could have bought a bunch of cases for dirt cheap and busted them for gradable cards.
