best set of the 70s

I think the 76 is the best looking set of the 70's. I'm suprised it doesn't have more interest (even with the lack of rookies).

I like the 76 set but I'm a bit biased since that was the first set I collected as a kid.

71 always the popular choice. Love those 73s, though, an undervalued set!

  • 71's are great. Always a sucker for the black borders.
75's are a close 2nd with all the colors.
72, 76, and 77 are also very nice cards that look great in any collection.
The other years are very blah in my opinion.

    Hello Frank!

This is available in my ebay store! It was to be a gift for Larry Brown (but we had a "falling out" and have not spoken in a few years). So it is now avail! Not too many on the planet that would be interested in this card, other than a few I know of, including you!

One thing consistent is that nobody likes the 1979 set. They are a little blaw but I'm kinda surprised they aren't more popular due to the centering challenges on those.

1973 and 1974 seems to get grouped together on everyones list. Kinda makes sense, they both have a "basic" style to them. Weird thing is that they are on the very top of some lists and on the very bottom of others.

1975's are my favorite. 71's and 72's are nice but I've never gotten into them much. I kinda like the look of 1970's but based on how hardly anybody pays decent money for them on ebay, I'm surprised they're high on anyone's lists.

The hate for the 79 set is puzzling to me. Centering issues aside, the photos are more vibrant and clear than the surrounding years.
  • The eclectic 73 set is the best.

    Then 71, 76, 74, 78, 77, 79, 70

Sorry guys, I don't like the 72 or 75 sets at all.

I hated the 76's when I was a kid. I'd always get three or four of those dreaded traded cards in every pack with the fake newspaper headline.

I disliked the 71's also. I was 7 years old and knew the first letter in a person's name was always capitalized, a fact that somehow escaped the Topps chewing gum company.

  • The 1973's are the worst cards ever produced. Yes, they have action shots, but ever other aspect about them makes me want to puke. I'm working on graded sets from 1970 through 1983 except one. I'll let you guess which one it is. Frank

  • It is interesting that some of these lists are almost opposites of each other. It probably is because Topps lacked creativity during this period coupled with sets that hold personal meaning to collectors. My list is as follows:

    1. 1971
    2. 1979
    3. 1976

Would anyone put any set from the 70s on a list of the top 10 Topps sets of all time?

I know it is a love it or hate it set but I love the 1972 Topps set and it would make my top 10 easily.

  • I would not have a set from the 1970s on a top ten list. I personally love the 1979 set because it is the first set that really got into as a child. I would not even list a set from the 1970s in my top 25.

I couldn't honestly answer this question and NOT put 1971 and 1975 at the top of my lists.

    My top five:

    1) 1971
    2) 1975
    3) 1972
    4) 1977
    5) 1978

Aside from the '71 set, I wouldn't. It is funny how my opinion of the '71's has changed since I was a kid. I thought that the '71 cards were the ugliest cards out there. Now as an adult, there's a strange attraction to them!
