Without breaking open the proof set, how does one tell if it's a silver 1976 or not?

Haven't played much with the sets and have a bunch still to go through.

A very good technique that I was given by Conder101 from ATS was lay a piece of toilet tissue over the set. The clad will be just a shade darker than the silver. The clad looks more grayish and the silver looks closer to white.

If I am correct the proof (and UNC sets for that matter) silver '76 issues were only released in the 3 coin sets (Quarter, Half, Dallar), as opposed to the regular clad 6 coin set. Thus, all coins in the 6 coin set would be clad and contain no silver.

In any event, the 40% silver coins have a softer look to them and look more like silver than a clad coin. I guess you just have to see the two beside one another to appreciate the difference.

Yep, the silver 76 proof set only has three coins.

  • I remember when those 3 piece silver sets first came out. The mint originally had a mintage limit on them which they later LIFTED after i already had received mine. I didn't buy another thing from the mint for 20 years after that!

    SCOUNDRELS!
