"Find" of 45 1949 Bowman BB cards

Hey all, I need a second opinion....

Theoretically, if this seller gave you a second chance offer @ $1700.00 shipped, would you take it? There's some sick cards in there....

Thanks for your opinions on this...

I would immediately question the authenticity of the 2nd chance offer. Is it actually in your "My Ebay Messages" area? If not, it's a phishing scam. Those cards should sell for more than $2K, so if it actually got to you at $1700, that means several of the other high bidders must've turned down the offer.

I say the offer you received is a scam.
  • The way it went down was this...

I bid $2,000.00 when it was FIRST on ebay. it didnt sell (reserve not met) then he relisted it and it again didnt sell (reserve not met).

Two days ago he e-mailed me (not though "my messages") and said that he'd let it go for $1700.00.

I R E Q U I R E D that if/when I did agree on that price, that he'd make it an eBay transaction (put up a BIN for $1700, e-mail me the item number and I'd biuy right away)

This offers me some protection that it's not a scam, dont you think? The dude has a great feedback rating too.....

    Thoughts?

He doesn't take PayPal so I don't think you are protected. I could be wrong but I thought PayPal is the only way to be protected on eBay.

  • If the email is not in "My Messages", then it's a scam. Like stated above, it is a phishing email. He may or may not get your money, but what he really wants is your log in credentials. You click the link to respond or answer the question, and he steals your user id and password because it is not a real link to eBay.
  • You bring up an excellent point.

So I pay, and he doesnt ship, I have no resourse then, right?

I'm not new to ebay, but I've also never payed with a payment method other than PayPal.

  • vintagetoppsguy, I'm unclear on what you're saying.

I didnt click any links or anything. He sent me an e-mail with text only. That's how we negotiated, then he said he'd do an eBay transaction (which is safe)....

How exactly is he gonna get my logons?

  • If he sent you an email with text only, then it is not a true second chance offer. It sounds like he's trying to do the deal outside of eBay (if it is really even him). It's been a long time since I've responded to a second chance offer, but I remember there were links to respond and links to accept or decline the offer.

A lot of the phishing scams out there actually have a link to a fake site that looks almost exactly like your eBay login screen and in order to reply to the original sender you are supposed to log in to your eBay account. When you click on the link and enter your information the scammer is able to see what you have typed for your password.

  • vintagetoppsguy, my apologies, I didnt mean it was an "official" second chance offer, but if I say yes to his prive, he'll basically list a BRAND NEW AUCTION on eBay, and I'll log onto the regular eBay site to buy. So it wasnt official, just a second chance negotiation of sorts.

cwazzy, THis is not the case in this situation. I wouldnt ever click any foreign links or anything. As I stated above, he'd list a BRAND NEW auction, then e-mail me the item number, then I'd go to the regualr eBay site to buy. I'm pretty sure it's not phishing.

Man you guys are way out there... Just go with what you suggested. REQUIRE him to list and that the payment go to a VERIFIED address along with Signature Requirement via Post Office.
  • Carew29,

Thanks. Yeah, the purpose of this wasnt really to question the authenticity/safety of the transaction, it was to ask if it's worth it (money-wise)

    Thoughts on that?
  • Now I understand what you are saying, but it still doesn't make sense on his part. An official second chance offer is the same thing as buy it now so I don't know why he would create more work and fees on his part. If he sends you an official second chance offer from the original auction that you bid on, then he will only have to pay have his listing fees and final value fees. If he re-lists it again under a different item number, then he still has to pay the listing fees from the original auction and listing fees and final value fees from the buy it now.

But either way, I think you should turn it down since you are not protected through PayPal. However, if he lives close to you, it might be worth the drive to inspect them first.
  • vintagetoppsguy,

    Thanks for your input.

I might just pass. I dont want to take a $1700 hit with no buyer protection.

Unless I can convince him to let me pay via Paypal. Then would you go for it?

So, a new auction, and he'll accept PayPal, then is it cool?

(Guys, my main focus here was the cards, do they look like they're worth it?)

Sometimes I think you guys are TOO suspicious.

The seller in question has a 99.6% feedback rating with over 4700 positives and it appears that he sells mostly estate items and collectibles. Given the nature of selling collectibles online, and the pettiness of some buyers when it comes to negative feedback, that's pretty decent. He hasn't received a neg in over 6 months.

Provided you can verify the authenticity of the offer (that it did indeed come from him) and you are comfortable with the price for the cards, I don't see a big downside.

  • Really not suspicious of the seller, but the legitimacy of the email. Then again, perhaps I'm the only one on the planet that has ever received a bogus second chance offer. However, regarding the seller, look at the item description. It states that the cards were mounted in an album - never a good sign. Also, from what I can see, the seller really doesn't sell much baseball cards so perhaps he has overstated the condition. I don't think the seller is intentionally trying to mislead or mis-represent the items, but then again he states that they would fall in the PSA 5-7 range, but later calls them NM-MT. How many PSA 5-7's do you have that would fall in the NM-MT category?
  • vintagetoppsguy,

He also said that baseball isnt their specialty, so he's consulted people that have told him they're 5-7.

The stains on the backs of some of the cards in the picture would probably preclude many high grades. Obviously the Robinson is the key to the lot. Like I said, if you are comfortable with the value I see no reason not to proceed, tough call from just the pics.
  • MooseDog,

I agree that the Robinson is the key. Some of the marked ones would get MK qualifiers.

  • The Musial and Robinson look to be in the 4-5 range, with probably most of the other cards receiving a ST qualifier.
If you want to start a set to keep its an average price.
If you want to flip them, I think the seller has aready taken the profit margin out of the equation.
I also agree with the "legitimacy " of the email so make sure its not a scam or phishing expedition. Email the seller through one of his other auctions....

It's definitely not a steal, but there's probably room to make 15% or so if you grade the cards without stains.
  • The intent is to flip.

I'll have to do some more thinking about this one.....

  • contact HIM through my messages on ebay. demand he replies via the same method.
