My son was in Phuket earlier this summer. He said it was 'empty'. Not many people at the hotels or on the beach. He also said you can't see much damage from the tsunami. I was in Phuket about 22 years ago but I still remember it as being a very beautiful place.

Hi Don, I have been reading the Phuket Gazette daily since I started planning this trip and it is saying they are having a great low season with many tourists. I saw the pix of the aftermath of the sunami in the area of Patong that we are going and pix now. You would never know there was a high tide their.

I am kind of lucky as I will get 1st class from Houston to Narita Japan on Continental because I work for them, then round trip on Thai Narita to Bangkok and Bangkok to Phuket will only cost $200 for 2 round trip.

I am looking forward to it as I haven't been to Thailand since '99 and we hit Bangkok & Hua Hin.

So back to my original question...........Need any coins or currency from Thailand????????

Hi Rick, summer is slow in Phuket because its the hot, rainy season, but down in Phuket, you'll always find some sun. I used to have a condo at Allamanda in the Laguna complex. It's north of Patong Beach. Where are you staying? Have a great trip and enjoy the Singha!!

What will you have access to while there?

Can you get circulation strikes from a bank?

If so, how much would it be for 1 of each denomination in BU?

Hi Tim, We will be staying in Patong at the Swiss Palm Hotel. You can bet I will be engaging in a few Singha's.

Hi dcamp, I know there is a bank in town, I'll see if I can get some unc's for you. I think the biggest problem might be in the translation. I see what I can do.......Rick

I'd love to oblige you, but my knowledge on the nineteen-teens is not what it should be and you must know that they make'em to order............Rick

I picked up one of those 1908 baht coins when I lived in Northern Thailand.

They are widely counterfeited by the local tribemen.

Hi Don, Thanks for that. I would hate to make a purchase and then later fin out it's fake. Last time in Thailand 1999, I bought a bunch of fake US Dollars and some Chinese stuff, but I knew they were fakes..........Think I paid fifty cents a piece. Either way, I will give anything I get the ring tone test as that is all I will have with me except the suntan lotion and coozie for the Singha's............

ps: set to leave in the morning and 1st class looks great....

  • Hi Rick, Thailand has put out lots of commem 5, 10 and 20 Baht coins every year for decades. One of each if in good shape (XF or better?) would be nice.
The Baht is worth about 3c U.S.
Here's a good site for more info: Thai currency pics and info.
Thanks for the generous offer to look!
Wish I could go too! ;-)
