Micheal Vick pleaded guilty today. Throw out all his cards.

I can't think of a worse thing to happen in the sports world since that Carolina Panther killed his pregnant girlfriend.

Being a Miami Hurricanes fan, I never liked Vick anyway. Being a college football fan, I always thought he played like a thug. When he entered the NFL and everyone touted him as the next thing in QBs, I crossed my fingers that something would happen to end his career early. I wish it weren't the senseless murder of dogs, but I pray the NFL doesn't let him return. He isn't good for football, he isn't good for race relations in the US, and he isn't the upstanding citizens that my fellow Atlanta citizens hold him up to be. Thankfully, I never invested a penny in him.

As far as Vick goes, go ahead and toss them out, there will be plenty of people ready to buy low and sell high when he comes back.

I'm not saying Miami hasn't had its share of thugs, but they were dealt with. Intentionally hurting players on the field has never been tolerated, and when it happens it has been punished. A lot of young men with questionable backgrounds have entered the Miami football program and have come out as much stronger individuals. I think that's a good thing.

I actually think it's great that dogfighting was the reason his career is done. This means that anybody who is high profile will think twice about funding such a disgusting operation, and a lot of the funding for the "industry". As long as there are imbred rednecks and wanna-be gangstas, there will always be dogfighting. But at least now, a lot of the money used to breed, train, and house the dogs will not be there.

I also love the fact that he's pleading guilty 2 weeks after telling both Goodell and Blank to their face that he knew nothing about it. I'm telling you, his career is done. No matter how good he ever plays, no team owner will risk the protests, cancelling of season tickets, and all around bad publicity, especially since he's not a proven big-game winner. If Brady or Manning were in Vick's shoes, it might be a different story.

  • I believe that some good will come out of all of this.

    1) Awareness that such a thing exists in this country.
    2) Stiffer penalties for the low lifes that participate.
    3) Public awareness commercials by the NFL

Well there is that gambling aspect of this and the NFL can ban you for life for just the gambling charges. The states are not through with him yet either. He also will get the biggest sentence of all involved since he was the ring leader.

I think I underestimated the stupidity of the people in this country. Actually, now that I think about it, he'll apologize using a carefully written statement done by his PR guys, go to animal sensitivity training, donate money to animal shelters, adopt some dogs and have a TV crew come to his house and film him playing with them, say he was wrong to fight dogs but now he's reformed, and the American public will forgive him by then. He'll be back on the field in 3 years.

If any of you think that society will Vick back, you may be correct. As we are now the society of 2nd chances (Kobe,Tyson). But if you think(excuse the pun) think that PETA is gonna roll over and play dead--think twice.

He may have plead out the fed deal but he still is going to tried as far as i know in Virginia as they are going after his property which was on the original indictment. There are also more charges coming down the pike--this ain't over by any means.

Sure it is....and how many people actually take PETA seriously? PETA, if they had their way, would abolish zoos and ban people from owning animals as pets. They'd do away with animals kept on farms as food as well. So please, don't think that PETA's protests against the NFL will be given any weight.

And more charges? Any state charges he will get off of with time served. He'll do max 18 months and be back on the field when he's 30.

Just got this quote off the A/P

"Meachum said the plea deal involves only the federal case. He said he doesn't know if there have been any discussions about resolving Virginia state charges that may be brought against Vick."

*ahem* Anyway, I'm glad Vick the Dick did the right thing by confessing and can now start paying for his crimes. And even if he somehow does make a comeback, I wouldn't count on it being a successful one. After all, look what happened to Tyson.

It's actually a great stroke of luck (in the long run) that this happened to someone famous. There are kids in this country who had no idea dogfighting was so bad until this became national news. Now that Vick will be ruined, more youngsters will know that it's illegal and have a more solid sense that it's cruel at an early age. People are still going to do it, unfortunately. But at least now, some more of the ignorant people will be aware of how effed up it is.

Yes, let's compare a HoFer like Bonds to Canseco (who was never 1/1000th the player Bonds was) or a mediocre player like Carruth?

    Ridiculous.

This is not so bad for Vick or the NFL as it is for the great sport of dogfighting. I mean this sport has been underground for so long and it was on the brink of being accepted since the rise in ultimate fighting and such. The deals we had in place with HBO and Showtime over the next 5 years would have brought us dog trainers and owners millions. After this it is going to be hard to get any big celebrities to come to the fights to pick their pockets. As you might have guessed this is a joke on society, dogfighting is a terrible thing and they should neuter all those who participate.

I was thinking something along the lines of ......

Year- 1 spend a year (or less) in jail .....
Year -2 sign a CFL deal and tear up that league for a year .....
Year -3 once the hoopla subsides .... sign with the Detroit Lions who'll probably be in need of a QB

Vick is a vile and disgusting dirtbag. He may also be facing a lifetime NFL ban if it's proven he was engaged in gambling on these dogfights, too. I agree with Lee. I think his career is over. I can't see any team willing to endure the fan backlash and the baggage and media nightmare that would come with signing him to a contract and he's never won anything anyway. He's an overrated player to begin with.

Well, Ray Lewis was involved (at least at some level) in the murder of a HUMAN being, and was back on the field and doing EA Sports advertisements within a year. My guess is that Vick does less than a year in the pen, and is back in the NFL by the 2009 season.

I love dogs as much as the next guy, but I think it's absolutely insane the backlash this has gotten when compared to Leonard Little who killed someone drunk driving.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,858 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, Ray Lewis was involved (at least at some level) in the murder of a HUMAN being,

The difference there, though, is that Lewis was not charged with a crime in that case, and his involvement was murky to begin with and never clearly defined. Vick has already acknowledged his guilt, and though obviously the taking of a human life is of the utmost seriousness, the barbaric cruelty and torture methods displayed by Vick in this case offend the most basic of sensibilities and is so sickening and repugnant that it resonates more vividly with the public.

Not TOO scientific, but using the 2001 Playoff Contender Michael Vick Autographed PSA 10 as an example, here are some recent sales:

    $158.00

    $284.99

$405.01 - Link no longer available

To HFLHOF - I have a (though probably not the last) Black Refractor in PSA 10 selling for $787.77.

But will his cards ever become WORTHLESS? e.g, less than, say, $10.00. Probably not. What will happen is what happens all other hyped players who fade away from the game. The cards are still there, but no on lists them.

Do you know how long I've been looking for a 1998 SP Authentic Ryan Leaf PSA 9 or 10? Forever. Literally years. I don't recall seeing one on ebay in, say, the last couple of years. But I know they are out there.

It's similar to Rick Ankiel. When his career was in the dumps, I looked all over for his cards. None to be found anywhere. Now that he is hitting home runs, all of his cards are coming out of the wood works. Of course, now people want $$$$ for them.

So for the record, anyone got one of these cards they want to sell me?

Then he should have been a running back. He's no QB, that's for sure. At best, he's a glorified Kordell Stewart. I'll send you all my Vick cards. Oops, sorry I don't own any and never have. He would have lost his starting job after this season even without the indictment.
  • <<<He would have lost his starting job after this season even without the indictment. >>>>>

You got that right, and to the nincompoops that traded away Schaub, they got what they deserved on that deal. The owner and GM traded him because they wanted to show Vick that he was the man in Atlanta.....and I thought it was bad when the Smiths owned th Falcons.

The fact you think it as an impossibility means you should look into the mirror when discussing "serious issues". There were plenty of analysts and evaluators questioning whether Vick would ever develop into the passing QB he needed to be to remain the starter. The fact these questions were even raised suggests he could lose his starting job. You can only pass for 2500 per season and fail to advance in the playoffs for so long before a team starts looking to go in another direction.

    Here's an example:

The additional issue with Vick is that well before he got in trouble, there were concerns about whether he could become a polished quarterback. Atlanta hired coach Bobby Petrino this offseason with the goal of concluding if Vick ever would harness his impressive talent.
