~~~NFL Defensive/Offensive Rookie of the Year Set Thread~~~
    I think Demeco Ryans should be 2006 SP Authentic. That will be the card used when the Alabama registry set is approved also.
    Sounds like a nice set to put together image
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
    I like consistency, so I'll suggest the SP Authentic of Demeco Ryans as well. image
    Are you doing the Gold version (/25) or regular version (/750)?
    Any other suggestions out there?
    Great idea, I think a #1 draft choice, rookie of the year or something along that line would be a good idea for a set.
    Thanks again for all the 85 topps!!
  • drewsefdrewsef Posts: 1,894 ✭✭
    just the regular version
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
    "regular version"....very good. Just checking.
    Should I just make the SP Authentic card the card to add to the players from the last 90's and current? Or, are there better options to go with on some of those players?
    Once we nail down the defensive list, we'll start working on the offensive side.
    the card for Carl Pickens is definitely the pro set, it's used in another registry set already and I would assume the Leonard Russell would be stadium club.
    some others you listed:
    Eddie George is the 96 SP
    Dana Stubblefield would probably be the 93 SP #241
    Peter Boulware 97 SP Authentic
    Randy Moss 98 SP Authentic
  • Arny,
    Great idea for a set!
    Its interesting to see the old names, and remember the guys that turned out to be:
    1. HOF'er
    2. good/great player
    3. flash in the pan
    After 2000, you should be using SP Authentic as the card. It should likely be Topps Chrome.
    Arny,
    Are you still going to put together the defensive set?
    Yep.
    After 2000, the SP Authentic are mostly autographed and/or game used cards which are not eligible for use in HOF or Key card sets.
  • Just some thoughts:
    You also have to be careful after 2002 on the Chrome cards, for instance, the 2005 Bowman Chrome Merriman is an autograph card.
    As for the other Defensive players: I would always pick the Topps cards over any police issue (1980).
    I would go with the AP over score and proset for 1990 (since they are not in the updates)
    In 1991, it's between the AP and Pinnacle
    In 1992, it has to be the 1992 stadium club.
    In 1993, it's between the AP and Upper deck (wasn't he is 1993 SP?)
    In 1998, Woodson is in SP Authentic, that should be the card
    If the card numbers less than 1000 it should not be included.
    Yes, doing both. But, the defensive players weren't getting comments/help so I went to the offense to get the feedback going. I'll be doing both sets. Should be fun.
    I appreciate the help with the newer stuff. I don't really follow too much of the newer stuff, so I could use the help.
    I've picked up a few of the defensive/offensive R.O.Y. cards so far. But, just trying to get the actual cards down specifically and the weighting after that.
    Any other suggestions/confirmations as to which cards I should submit to PSA?
    look only 8-10 HOF to potential HOF on the Def ROY and 10-12 HOF to potential HOF on the Off ROY. So its roughly a 25% chance that either ROY will make the HOF.
    I can't afford those so I usually go with the Topps or Bowman chrome, but will try to look into them since your overwhelmed with help already(too bad it's not a set 2 or 3 guys here aren't interested in or didn't create themselves, or they might help you too)
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
    I'm sure that once it's created we'll have plenty of folks wanting to jump on the set. But, for now, it's the tough part of the research and suggestions.
    I'm creating a spreadsheet (Cosetta likes it when you do the work for them! image ) with the cards and such. Then, we'll place a weighting for it as well. This way, all they have to do is to create the set and have folks add their cards. image
    I definitely don't claim to be 100% correct, but did a little looking into each card:
    Vince Young: Either 2006 Bowman Chrome or Topps Chrome, all the 2006 SP Authentic cards I could find either had a patch or auto or a combination of the two.
    Cadillac Williams: same as above with the SP Authentic, either 2005 bowman chrome or topps chrome(I think this is the more attractive set)
    Ben Roethlisberger: same deal with SP Authentic and Bowman Chrome, they are both autos. probably 2004 topps chrome
    Anquan Boldin: has an SP Authentic patch #850, or Topps Chrome or Bowman Chrome
    Clinton Portis: 2002 Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, and SPX, other major brands are autos or patches
    Anthony Thomas: UD Pros and Prospects #1000, Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome that are not autos or patch cards
    Mark Carrier: the Action Packed rookie update is used for Leroy Butler's rookie card, I assume that it's possibly the more limited than Pro Set or Score, if there is such a thing.
    Mike Croel: would probably think Pinnacle, then Action Packed rookie update
    Dale Carter: Stadium Club
    2001 Kendrell Bell Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker 2001 SP Authentic
    2002 Julius Peppers Carolina Panthers Defensive end 2002 Topps Chrome looks like this is the best non-auto or patch
    2003 Terrell Suggs Baltimore Ravens Linebacker (2003 Topps Chrome (same as Peppers)
    2004 Jonathan Vilma New York Jets Linebacker (2004 Topps Chrome(personal preference over 04 Bowman Chrome design) or Bowman Chrome(same as previous two)
    2005 Shawne Merriman San Diego Chargers Linebacker not as easy to find a non-auto card. noticed Leaf Rookies and Stars, Ultra, Bowman, Playoff Prestige, Leaf Certified Materials, Leaf Limited, Absolute Memorabilia, as the more notables, but not 100% if any are too short numbered. Definitely the Bowman, Playoff Prestige, and Ultra are not autos, patches, or too limited. edited to add, there's also a regular Donruss Classics #1999
    Thanks Drew!
    I'll try and update those soon in my original list. I'd appreciate some additional help if anyone knows for sure on those more modern ones.
    Here's another recent addition to my NFL Defensive/Offensive R.O.Y. set.....
    ...for the Vince Young Rookie, is the Topps Chrome #223 the regular one? All of them on eBay state "Special Edition" on them. Are they all the same?
    I looked up the values in Beckett online for
    Mark Carrier, Mike Croel, and Dale Carter
    Drew had them pretty good!
    Mark Carrier most valuable/ scarce rookie = 1990 Action Packed rookie update #30
    Mike Croel most valuable / scarce rookie = 1991 Stadium Club # 310
    Dale Carter most valuable / scarce rookie = 1992 Stadium Club # 689 (from the high series, not the easiest card to find BTW)
    Cant wait to participate in the set !!
    In 2006 Topps chrome really messed up with the silly Special Edition thing, so here are what they produced:
    regular 2006 topps chrome Vince Young (this is the one to use in my opinion under the registry guidelines)
    2006 topps chrome with special edition logo Vince Young(same, but a parallel to PSA cause it has the SE logo on it)
    2006 topps chrome Vince Young refractor with SE logo(they didn't offer a refractor with no special edition logo, weird but whatever)
    Great job guys! We'll get this done yet! image
    By the way, I noticed that the Carl Pickens used for the All-Time Bengals was the Pro set one and I hear it's a tough condition sensitive one. But, the Action Packed shows worth more from what I saw. Should we keep it as the Pro-Set one? (I'm fine with that, just wondering)
    Well, I had picked up a few raw cards and I think that I did real well with a couple of them. I have four Duane Bicketts that I'm looking to submit and three Eddie Brown cards from the '86 Set. Then, I have two Buddy Curry cards ('83 Topps) to submit as well. All of them seem to have really nice shots at 9s and I might be able to squeeze out a 10 out of a couple of these! image
    Here's another card that I picked up for our future set....
    Brandon Marshall was a rookie last year. I would think either Peterson, Calvin Johnson, or Lynch all have a good shot, and either Patrick Willis or Paul Posluzny look good so far. Of course Amobi Okoye had 2 sacks yesterday and who knows who could really get adjusted to NFL speed and have a great remainder of the year, but I would have to say Willis has the lead right now.
    I think unless Willis gets injured he's a lock for ROY on defense unless Okoye really turns it on. I think the offensive ROY is for Peterson to lose with Bowe and Lynch a distant 2nd and 3rd, with Calvin Johnson potentiallly giving it a run if his back gets better and Peterson gets injured or really has a decline. I don't think Brandon Jackson is even going to break 500 yards rushing this year, especially given Morency coming back and the other rookie packer RB Deshawn Wynn being ok at short yardage.
    ...in the short time that I've been following some of the late '70s football cards, the '77s really seem to have a quality control issue with the centering problems. Plus, the design is "top heavy" which makes it seem off centered sometimes when it's not. Not sure if that plays tricks on the minds when determining grades. image
    To be honest, I'd rather just set one set as THE rookie card for each player - say Topps Chrome???!!!
    Well, it's been pretty consistent as far as the cards in the set go. The most recent years (2002-2005) look to be all Topps Chrome. With the exception of last year's DeMeco Ryans who had a "regular" SP Authentic that wasn't all patched or auto'd up! image
    For the 1997-2001 years we have SP Authentic as the card of choice. And, from 1970 through 1988 we have Topps as the card. So, with the exception of the "card boom" years of '89 through '96 we have pretty consistent cards going for the set. I was surprised to see that Tim Bowens & Hugh Douglas didn't have SP cards in the '94 & '95 sets respectively. We could've had a small SP ('93-'96) run before the SP Authentic cards of '97.
    The weighting is one that I'd like to put out here on the threads for debate.
    For the defensive side of the ball I see everyone at a 1.00 rating aside from the following.....
    Lem Barney 2.50
    "Mean" Joe Greene 3.00
    Jack Lambert 2.50 or 3.00?
    Mike Haynes 2.50 or 3.00?
    Lawrence Taylor 4.00?
    Derrick Thomas 2.00
    Dale Carter 1.50
    Simeon Rice 1.50
    Brian Urlacher 3.00
    ....is this fair for the defensive side of the ball? The full list of players is on the first page of this thread.
    As far as the offensive players, I have everyone at a 1.00 weighting aside from the following....
    Franco Harris 3.00
    Tony Dorsett 4.00
    Earl Campbell 4.00
    Ottis Anderson 1.50
    Marcus Allen 3.00 or 3.50?
    Eric Dickerson 4.00
    Barry Sanders 5.00
    Emmitt Smith 5.00
    Jerome Bettis 3.00
    Marshall Faulk 2.50
    Curtis Martin 2.00
    Eddie George 1.50
    Randy Moss 1.50 or 2.00?
    Edgerrin James 1.50
    Clinton Portis 1.50
    Ben Roethelisberger 1.50
    I was under the impression that the 'value' of the card along with the popularity of the individual had something to do with it. If it's simply the value, then how do you tier the values?
    Like I said, I'm not the best person to ask, I thought I had read it on the boards here in the past regarding the value in PSA to determine weight(of course could not find it when searching past threads.) Maybe a pm to Jasp24 or OSclabs would be more helpful.
