Do you require immediate payment on your Buy It Now items?

I have had luck with listing stuff as buy it now, but in the last few weeks I have had (0) feedback buyers winning and screwing my listing up. Should I make immeiate payment required? Would that steer away any potential buyers?

I require immediate payment for 100% of my buy-it-now's. If you want it bad enough to buy it, paying for it immediately is reasonable.

  • Yes I do.

But in fairness to the other side, I also hit bin's and for various reasons can sometimes not pay until the next business day. So if all sellers required immediate payment, it would hurt me occasionally.

Something to keep in mind if you go that route is that if you accept a "best offer" option on your auction, they are NOT required to pay immediately (for obvious logistical reasons).

I wouldn't require someone to pay immediately. It dosen't send a real friendly tone.

I hate it when the sellers require immediate payment, and has more then one item I want, but they normally combine shipping. Meaning, when that feature forces me to either pass up the deal or pay extra shipping.

  • usually my buy it now stuff is not hobby related; as those auctions are true auctions. i use BIN on medical stuff, supplies and equipment and require immediate payment.

I think requiring immediate payment is a mistake. I've had a number of good buyers who just needed I guess a few days to move some money around in theie bank accounts and get it into PayPal. Some banks have check clearing times these days of sometimes up to four days and perhaps somebody has just deposited their paycheck in their bank account, uses "Buy it Now" knowing they're going to pay for it soon when the check clears.

Probably 90%+ of my "Buy it Now" buyers pay immediately anyway. Yes, there's been a few who haven't paid but no big deal - I just relist it and sell it to somebody else. I think the good far outweighs the little bit of occasional bad.
  • I agree I will not buy from a seller who does it as I tend to buy several items from the same seller at the same time the feature does not make this easy so I just move to the next one.

Thanks for the input guys. It think I will just keep it as the regular BIN.

I treat these auctions no different than any others. Why would you? In effect, the buyer is agreeing to pay your premium price, so why hassle him with immediate payment demands?
