'77 Topps Football

I bought a '77 vending box a few weeks ago, (GAI 9.5 rated), and I submitted the top 100 cards in hopes of coming close to finishing my '77 set. I got back the grading results a couple of days ago and the results were: psa 5 - 60, psa 7 - 11, psa 8 - 8, psa 8oc - 6, psa 9 - 2,psa 9oc - 12, psa 9mc - 1. That was a tuff draw for me.
I don't know weather I will put the psa 5's in the set or sell them in a lot of 60 on e-bay. The thing that hurts is that they are all low pop.
commons that never pop up on e-bay.
I've noticed the competition on e-bay for '77 football has picked up for anything psa 9. A psa 9 Roger Staubach just ended for 104.49. I came in second. Its not just the stars either, low pop. commons are going for over $20 on avg.

I would recommend taking a good week or so once those get back to study all the 5's as well as the rest of the cards to see what you missed, most likely it was creases.
  • Creases sounds about right. Tough submission results for sure. I had a 5 come back recently. I was puzzled until I saw the crease that I missed prior to submitting.

Thanks for the advise. When I submitted the cards they all had strong corners and were the best centered out of the 500. Should I be looking with a magnifying glass for these creases, they must be very small. I have seen some psa 5's in sorry shape, nothing like what I submitted.
I guess the shock has worn off now, but I am affraid to submitt anything in the future if I can't come close to estimating the grade before submitting.

The 77's have alot of PD's.

They are plagued by little green dots that keep them from getting good grades. Once you get past that, you have all the other normal stuff that keeps a 30 year old card from a good grade

This happened to me on some crisp 79 BB. I had already developed a good eye to that point so I was shocked at getting PSA 5's.

Turned out to be tiny ripples across the surface from the sheet cutting process. otherwise the cards were sure 9's.

    Buy the magnifying glass.

also check your email for some 77 set help.

    Loves me some shiny!

I use a desk lamp to look for the ripples and/or creases. If you hold the card at angle towards the lamp and the surface is shiny, it is easy to see creases and spider wrinkles.

I had a bunch of 78 baseball that I sent and and learned how to use different checks for card defects.
