Kinda OT: What does this do to future Baseball drafts

Yesterday a 5th rounder was finally signed by the team that drafted him for what many assume is the signing bonus and contract of a first rounder. Now granted this high school player was believed to be a high first round pick in the draft but slipped alot due to his contract demands. Now I personally know this player and am excited for him, but I think it may set a new precedence. What will this do to future contracts of draftees?

  • I don't think it will have an effect at all on future drafts. We've seen for years players slip in the draft because of signability issues. Add in the fact that some high schoolers really own all the cards in the draft by threatening the college route and teams will always draft how they want when they want, and pay when necessary...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

This really does happen all the time but you don't hear much about it because most people only know who a handful of baseball draft picks are. Checkout baseballamerica.com to learn more. Here for instance is the Yankees alone Yankees Signings
  • I guess you are right just stands out more since I do know him and have watched him play for the past 4 years in High School.. He will be missed by our athletics program. We still have his sister though. She went like 14-1 last year with 185Ks in 105 innings and had a 0.04 ERA as a sophomore.
