Has anyone ripped 1982 Fleer baseball?

I am thinking about buying a box. If you have ripped one, how did you do with getting Ripken? What are the other key cards to this set?

Comments

  • Well I ripped them back in 1982. I can't recall how many packs I opened back then but I had to have done at least two boxes worth and I only have one Ripken. In my opinion 1982 Fleers are some rather unsightly cards. Much of the photography is out of focus. The key card would be the Ripken rookie. The other cards to look out for all all variations. #438 Hrabosky , #603 Lee Smith rookie card and of course the big one the John Littlefield reverse negative. The Smith seems fairly common. Hrabosky and Littlefield are way harder to find. Basically if you take the Ripken and those three variations out of the equation the set has nothing noteworthy at all.
  • The last wax box I bought from BBCE was 1982 Fleer. I got one Ripken, with L-R centering about 65-35.

    No Hrabosky or Littlefield, though.

I thought it was a fun rip for the money.

I bought one on Ebay a while back. Same results as Mucky. One Calvin and very poor centering thoughout.

......and yes I know Emmitt Smith wasnt in there.

Well, I ripped a full box in '82 and got 3 Ripkens, a reverse negative Lee Smith but no Littlefield. Take that for what it's worth.

The same year I busted a box and a half of Donruss and got zero Ripkens, so...that was the way it went in the wild, whacky, laugh in the face of death world of card collecting, ©March 1982, buying boxes of cards at the convenience stores and getting odd looks from the cashier when you plunk the whole box on the counter.

I am ashamed of myself, I DID NOT KNOW there was also a Lee Smith reverse negative. I been going through mt commons looking to seperate teams (hint if you need any teams) and I noticed the Smith looked weird to me, but I still put it in the common pile! Is Lee Smith a common image, also wha tthe heck do I do with my Palmiero cards ?? As far as the ripken I pulled 5 out of wax, one graded 8 the rest waaaay o/c. i dont think PSA 10's of commons even go for that much??

That was a poor choice of words on my part. It's not a reverse negative the way the Littlefield card is, or the 90 Donruss Juan Gonzales cards were. The Cubs logo on the back is reversed on some of the cards. The error version is scarcer, plus it's his rookie.
  • No, but if you do, look for Pete Rose. If you could somehow pull a psa 10 on one, you could make some bank. psa 10 population is 1. Korth would pay high dollar for it.

I used to have that magazine! I'd love to start a run of those sometime. Did you also happen to notice those baseball card inventory programs they did an article on also? And don't forget to stock up on all those 1991 sets they said back then that PRICES ARE SURE TO GO UP!!! image

Coallation in Fleer was great, so you won't get that many doubles and will probably pull 1 Ripken. The problem with the box is unless you get a Ripken or Rose PSA 10, nothing is worth grading. I got 3 PSA 10's out of my box, all commons, and started them at .01 on ebay. They sold for .06 and .08 respectively to some jackass named pandrews.

I bought an '82 Fleer set from a dealer in 1984. I called and asked if he'd deliver it. He did. I was 12 and had no concept of what a tip was. I handed him the $10 he was asking and closed the door.

I still feel kinda guilty about that, even though I was completely ignorant at the time.

I still have that set and haven't looked at it in 20 years. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend with the more discerning eyes of an adult. image

I got a couple of vending boxes from Mark Murphy a few years ago. Pulled some good Ripkens and pulled some bad ones too but no reverse negatives. The cards dont hold a shine well and the sun is a nightmare on this set. Very condition senstive set.

Nice issue with Donnie Baseball on the cover. Pretty cool checklist and article about him, too. I always liked those.

(Incidentally, that's not a paraphrase, I copied it verbaitum last night.) Some things are just so hilariously, wildly off base that you never forget them. Plus, I'm a world class grudge holder, so this stayed in my mind for years. For some reason it reoccured to me a few days ago as a perfect sig for this board.
