$20,000 for a 1972 football set?

Mile High Auctions just closed a 1972 football set with only nine PSA 9 cards (no big rookies at all) and the rest PSA 8.

I can't find the auction now that it closed but WTF is going on with that price? That set is worth $5000-$6000 in that shape.

I read the listing and it said which cards were in 9 and which were in 8 but it was not the clearest description as the first card grade 9 was #44 and it looked like 44 cards were graded in PSA 9 which may have driven up the price.

Can anyone find the link to show it?

Also of note, this 1963 football set in PSA 8 went for $ 19,035 with no 9's and 16 - PSA 7's

Crazy, although at least it wasn't $20K on a modern A-Rod card....

  • Why do auctions always seem to bring "record prices" while ebay sales or sales from dealers stay flat?

    Hmmmmm...

Not that I distrust all of them. Just seems like very convenient advertising when they consistently break new records.
  • I don't know about ebay being flat. Last month I sold my 1971 Topps Football PSA Set (All 8's no 9's and 5 cards short of being finished) for $6,600.00. These sets are very tough to put together it took me 2 years to put my 1972 Topps Football PSA Set together (27 9's the rest all 8') I may send mine to an auction house. 21k would buy lots of new cards!
Looking for 1971 Topps Football PSA 8 NQ or above, and slowly working my way into the 1962 Topps Football Set. Check out my 1972 Topps Football Set 100% Complete.

That's a crazy price for a '72 FB set. I like the fact that some auction places are offering complete sets, but they sure don't break them down well in the descriptions. I couldn't tell on Mile's High's auction what was the GPA for the sets he was offering. Terrible write ups if you ask me. It's a jumbled mess.

I don't trust the bidding process either when you can't see the under bidders (auction houses and now ebay for over $200 auctions).

Why keep in hidden? I can see during the auction to have private bidding id's, but when it's all over you should be able to view who might be bidding you up.
