NL Cy Young - whos it gonna be?

Its still a little early, but to me its a 4 man race, Peavy, Young, Zambrano, and Hudson. Im thinkin Hudson will get the nod, he will be the only of the 4 players to make the post season....................

  • hmm. gonna be a horse race. I think Hudson will rack up the most wins (which is GREAT for my fantasy team!) Young missed too much time this year; Peavy has been brilliant at times, but also inconsistent. Zambrano is my 2nd pick.

I don't think it's a 4-man race at all. There are a lot of guys in the NL that are putting together solid seasons that are worthy of consideration. Brad Penny has 14 wins and a 2.61 ERA; Brandon Webb has 12 wins, a 2.77 ERA, and he plays for a team that could make the playoffs; Ted Lilly's numbers are nearly identical to Zambrano's except he has fewer losses; Roy Oswalt has been solid with a 3.32 ERA and 13 wins on a bad team (sorry Stown); and then let's not forget guys like Cole Hamels, Aaron Harang, and John Maine. It's still very much up in the air.

But if I had to place a bet today (not a vote) I'd bet that Peavy will win it when it's all said and done.
  • honestly I had forgotten that Penny had 14 wins.

Chris Young's stats are amazing no matter how much time he missed, he deserves consideration...
  • The winner will come from which ever pitcher carries their team to the playoffs. My bet is on Webb to repeat - he's been pitching lights out over his last 6 starts and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Plus, he's on my fantasy team.

Yeah, i somehow totally forgot to mention Penny, he has been throwing very well this year. I just threw young on this list because of his sub 2.00 ERA.

I'd venture to say that it's the safe bet that Jake Peavy's locked it up. He's leads the NL in ERA, Wins, and StrikeOuts (Pitching Triple Crown), and no one can catch him now.

  • yup. Peavy all the way, Young has totally collapsed and everyone else except webb has fallen by the wayside. voting should go Peavy, then Webb.

  • It's Peavy and it's not really a discussion at this point...he's far and away the best pitcher in the NL this year.

Has anyone ever picked up a "Pitching Triple Crown" and NOT won a Cy Young Award?

  • I agree, its not all about wins. That's why Brandon Webb will get some votes to be sure, in fact SD and AZ are such pathetic offensive teams that both Peavy and Webb will garner MVP votes as well.
  • Wins are worthless for determining a pitcher's worth...but its a major factor for cy young voters. But Peavy has been a step above everyone else all year and is deserving of the Cy Young.
