Scotch Tape on Card

Anybody have any suggestions for getting scotch tape off some early 1960s cards? Bought some nice cards very cheap but that was only because they were taped to a book at one time. Thanks.

  • I have had a lot of luck soaking the card in Afta , a cleaning fluid, and gently rubbing with my finger. Only works on the front, the back leaves a stain. Try it on a creased common first.

When I purchase cardboard boxes with price tags on them, I run a hair dryer over the label to heat the glue and remove the label. I don't know if it will work on cards or not, but at least it's not a chemical.

  • I did a quick demo on a 1966 Marvel comic card.
    before
    after
    before back
    after back

After you soak it and peel the tape off you rub it with a soft terry washcloth or towel while wet to remove the glue. The print loss you see on the front by Halloween and next was from me being too agressive and rubbing too hard trying to post this quickly.

  • Would PSA ever grade a card that had this procedure performed on it? (Removal of tape?)

  • Is it any different than using stockings to remove gum stains ? Not every card needs to be graded. What's wrong with having it look nice in a raw set ?

    It's a slippery slope.

How much can you do to a card before it's considered doctored?

    Removing wax? Tape? Creases? Tears?

    See where I'm going?

Edited to add: If it's staying in your personal collection, you can do whatever your heart desires. Even use it for toilet paper for all I care image

i think removing wax and crap from a card that wasnt originally supposed to be there is fine..

in fact i had a nice card i sent in that came back psa 8(st) because i didnt notice a small amount of wax on it.. damn right i broke it out of the case, took the wax off, and now i have a PSA 8..

i'd take the tape off too if i could..

edited to add - i dont know if it's smart to use any chemicals on a card though.. im not sure what Afta is..

Nothing at all. I was just curios if they would grade it.

I agree. I see nothing wrong with removing junk that should not be there.
