Is this South African Set Proof or Uncirculated?

I have this set on eBay as a proof set, but someone just emailed me saying he thinks it's an Unc set in the proof case. On looking at the set more closely, the coins do appear quite lustrous and there appears to be some die polish evident. I obviously don't want to sell an incorrectly described set, so your two cents are quite appreciated.

I don't know. I don't know about these. But it does kinda look MS rather than PF. That said, I've been watching it regardless since I want one, MS or PF, of that year for my dad's birthday (he was born 1958).

I don't know much about SA coins either. But I would say MS.

According to Krause, MS1 is the first mint set listed and dated 1967. PS42 is the proof set 9 pieces that you appear to have, if they all came from a set and were not put together in that plastic. I have a 1955 set and it definitely LOOKS proof, unlike those.

The plastic case looks way to modern to be from 1958.

  • In comparison with the SA proof set I have these coins look MS, and I agree with WillieBoyd that the holder does not match the date either. A nice set none the less, and I have no idea what the value should be

They sure don't look like proofs.

  • the holder is after-market and not part of either the proof sets or ms sets issued by the SA mint. from the look of the coins, I have to agree that the set is MS and not Proof.

No way as a proof, unc. only and look at the obverses especially.

  • Not being an expert in this area, I can't say for sure that the SA mint never issued proofs that weren't deeply mirrored (particularly the silver pieces). But I have purchased a dozen or so individual coins from the late 50s/early 60s in the past couple of years, and there is no question at all that they (the coins I bought) are proofs. Based on the pictures posted, my impression is that those coins are uncirculated, and if I were bidding on the lot, I'd bid as such.

This is my 1958 set. It was bought as a Proof Set years ago in a proof set case, the blue one. I put it into the current holder because the coins were basically untoned. I believe I purchased the set from Dennis Gill but I'm not 100% positive about that.

I may send some of the coins to NGC to see if they are proof or ms.

Honestly, I can not see what the discussion is as these from the pictures have signs of being well struck and even some die polish lines show, but they are clearly uncirculated.

I'm far from an expert on these, but my gut reaction when seeing those pics is MS, not PF.

I have seen other 1950s proof sets in the original cases that look like this one, with muted mirrors and an almost MS-like appearance. It could be the result of die polishing.
  • Just for kicks- here are some individual proofs:
