Schilling's got a Big Mouth and now Bond's might be going after him.

Bonds might sue accusers, including Schilling
New home run king 'tired of being kicked around,' says one of his lawyers

I was reading an article at msnbc and it said that Bond's is tired of all the "stuff" being said about him. I say good for Bonds. I know that a lot of it he bought on himself but to kick the guy when he's down (like schilling is doing), is not right. Schilling has a big mouth and maybe now someone is going to try and shut it. I hope Bonds succeeds so it might make a big mouth like Schilling think twice next time. chaz

How can he sue someone for making truthful statements?

    Here is the article: chaz

Barry Bonds apparently is ready to fight back.

According to a report by InsideBayArea.com, the web site for the Oakland Tribune, the new home run king has hired two lawyers to go after and punish those that make false statements about him.

Oakland’s John Burris and San Francisco’s Todd Schneider announced Monday they will defend the slugger against false statements made by private citizens related to any illegal act someone might claim Bonds has admitted to.

“Barry is basically saying that he has been kicked around a lot and he is tired of being kicked around,” Burris said. “Our issue is really about statements that are made that are attributed to him that are not true. Particularly, statements that someone might say he made about the use of steroids or tax evasion.”

In his press release, Burris referred to Bonds’ former girlfriend, who made accusations in a Playboy article, and a former business partner who supposedly told the FBI that Bonds had evaded taxes, as examples of what kind of statements he would investigate.

"This is directed at Schilling more than anybody," criminal defense attorney Michael Rains, representing Bonds in a grand jury probe related to the BALCO case, told the San Jose Mercury News.

"Schilling said some things that were inappropriate and potentially defamatory. I know it was upsetting to Barry. We talked about the issue and I know he was talking to some civil lawyers to put people on notice that he has someone defending him."

According to various reports, most notably in the book “Game of Shadows,” that was released in 2006, Bonds began using steroids after the 1998 season that featured Mark McGwire’s and Sammy Sosa’s march past Roger Maris’ single-season record of 61 home runs.

Ever since, Bonds has been dogged by reporters and booed at every ballpark around the country while he chased Hank Aaron’s all-time home run mark that he eclipsed last Tuesday at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

“While pursuing Hank Aaron’s home run record, Barry felt that it was more prudent to remain silent,” a statement read. “Now that the record has been broken, Burris and Schneider will evaluate any and all statements attributed to him that are false.”

Burris said the purpose of the announcement and his retention as Bonds’ attorney is not to go after media publications or to curtail free speech and opinions against the controversial baseball player. Instead, he said, it is to stop those who might think they know something about Bonds from telling a false story.

'Wrong' does not equal 'illegal'. Therefore, no grounds to sue.

You can sue anyone for anything, just doesn't mean you will win.

Had Bonds did this a year ago, he would have more people on his side (probably including myself).

If I was Schilling and had his money, I'd say bring it on. We'll lawyer it up and get some depositions going to determine whether Bonds did do steroids, because that would be key as to whether Curt was telling the truth. How odd would that be, to have the truth about Bonds come out that way.

While Bonds is at it, he may as well sue Bob Costas, the Chronicle reporters, and the federal prosecutors as well. Eh, come to think of it he's going to have an indictment on his hands before the year is up so he may think twice about suing anyone.

    Hardly.

Actually, what was wrong was Bonds putting himself in a position to where Schilling had something to talk about. Conduct yourself properly, and no one has any reason to talk. Attacking someone else for calling Bonds out is just another example of how twisted things have become in today's politically correct, don't-offend-anyone society. We're probably not too far removed from someone being able to collect damages for hurt feelings.

What truthful statements might those be? Oh you mean how Bonds has never failed a drug test? That's right he hasn't.

Schilling needs to leave his political aspirations behind when it comes to running his yap...talk about the yanks, get your team fired up, but getting on a soapbox and preaching like he does is sickening.

Bonds will now only open himself up to investigation. Unfortunately you know they would never let Bonds testify himself. No doubt Schilling would hire man eating sharks for lawyers. This could be interesting.

As a Red Sox and Schilling fan I believe Schilling is way out of line and should keep his big mouth shut and stick to winning ballgames for the Sox. He is wrong

Why talk? Show some class and keep your mouth shut. Enough fans around the league let him hear about it in every ball park (except his own home park). I really don't know how Bonds does it. chaz

I know exactly how he does it. He doesn't care what the fans think. He doesn't care what the fans say. The only thing Barry Bonds* cares about is Barry Bonds* and how Barry Bonds* was going to do anything he could, including cheat, to get the home run record. If you think Barry Bonds* didn't cheat, you're not dealing in reality. He cheated like McGwire* cheated and Sosa* cheated and Giambi* cheated and Sheffield* cheated....and on and on. None of it is right. If McGwire* or Sosa* or anyone else was going after the most hallowed record in sports, they too would have been under the spotlight.

Some of you people talk about "innocent until proven guilty"...and that's all good and well...for a court of law. The court of public opinion does not have the need to be bound by those same guidelines. As Bob Costas said on a local broadcast when the Giants were here in Milwaukee...I live on this planet and live in reality. I see the physical changes that have taken place with Barry Bonds* and it is very clear. Barry Bonds* has taken steroids whether he's tested positive or not. He's never failed a drug test? Of course not. It's been widely documented that "the clear" would get past every test. Those tests would've picked up a glass of tap water as easily as they would have picked up the clear.

Live in denial all you want...Barry Bonds* is a cheater.

I never implied that he was not a cheater. He is still a human being and it's got to hurt him, he just doesn't show it. chaz

Let it hurt. He made his bed...
It's called taking responsibility for his actions. If he had just come right out and said he did it, apologized for it and moved on, the fan reaction and player reaction to him in general would be exponentially better. However, instead he denies reality, so he deserves everything he gets. The sad part is that he probably doesn't even feel like he did something wrong.

    Boo Barry. Boo!

  • It's pretty funny that a guy who cemented his place in history from receiving a steroidal injection (i.e. cortisone shot) is the one running his yap about steroids being bad and Bonds being a bad guy taking them.

Gumby Fan nailed it. I salute Curt Schilling, Bob Costas, and others for calling it like they see it.

The indictment's coming, Barry. You may not have to worry about playing beyond 2008, unless you're interested in the left field spot for the Federal Penal League.

I'll be surprised if Bonds ever files a lawsuit against anyone alleging defamation of character. Bonds' lawyers have to be advising him that if he files a lawsuit, he'll first get pounded with piles of written discovery and then afterwards, the defendants will be noticing his deposition. The deposition notice will say that it will continue "from day to day" until completed. I've attended depositions that have lasted over six days. Can you imagine how many days Bonds will be testifying? And for what? For a few dollars, millions or otherwise. Not worth it, especially since you presumably have tens or hundreds of millions of dollars already.
