It is an ancient Roman ring - almost certainly for a child's hand, and is probably from the first century AD. The Roman's considered snakes to be guardian's of health and made rings of this sort to ward off disease. This was probably due to the fact that during an outbreak of the plague in Rome, the Temple of Aesclipus gave the city snakes, which were let loose in the city. They ate the rats that carried the plague-infected fleas and the epidemic ended. The Roman's then dedicated an island in the Tiber River to the snakes which had saved the city.

It is somewhere around $1,000, give or take a couple hundred dollars. Seemed like a wonderful value to me. I loved the spear as a metaphor for the speed of the greyhound.

Please explain the little snake to me, it looks way too small to be a ring. I am intrigued by it..
