collecting Thalers

Hi folks. I recently inherited some german coins thalers and 5 mark coins from around the empire era to pre WW-II. I'd like to turn this into a set or 2. With some of the research I've been doing, I think I'd like to start collecting Thalers, they seem an interesting lot. I just started back into US moderns and now I've got a bigger world set than my moderns.

Besides just picking the ones I like from the Krause book, is there a type set, or anything of that sort. Is there a german version of Dansco?

Welcome, Keleum. If you post the list of coins you've acquired, we should be able to narrow it down to a series that might correspond to what you already have. German Thalers, in itself, is a huge field of numismatics. There is no "Dansco Type Album" that I am aware of. You best guess would be to pick-up some reading materials, like "German talers, 1700-1800" or "German talers since 1800" by John Stewart Davenport, or even "Standard Catalog of German Coins" which is one of Krause books.

There are also a number of collectors on these boards, specializing in German coins who might be able to point you in the right direction.

    Good luck!

Thalers can be an never ending collection. I suggest trying to get one from each of the German States and go from there. Also, I don't think the German Empire issued Taler coins but I could be wrong on that account.

I have a complete Davenport Reference library that isn't being used any longer... imageimage
  • Thanks, I'll go look up that davenport book. My thought was to get one from each state as suggested and build from there, but I'd enjoy learning more about these coins too.

The empire did replace the thaler with the 5-Mark coin, from my collection it looks like 1876... image

Currently I have mainly early 20th century, but these from the 19th

    KM488 1861A Thaler Prussia
    C49 1832 Crown Thaler Nassau-Guillaume
    KM500 1871A Thaler

    KM632 1895F 5 Mark
    KM503 1876A, C, D 5 Mark
    KM287 1876J 5 Mark
    KM512 1894D 5 Mark
    KM523 1898A 5 Mark

Does anyone know when/where the last Thaler minted?

Actually the thalers circulated longer than one would think. The double thalers were no legal tender from 1876 on.
Due to a form error in the monetary act of the new Empire, it only mentioned "German" thalers, of all things the Austrian
double thalers remained in circulation until 1901.

    However thalers like this one

were legal tender and circulated until 1907. The 1 thaler pieces were replaced through the 3 Mark pieces in 1908.

As far as I can remember it was in 1872, a Saxonian double thaler commemorating the golden wedding of King Johann
    and Queen Amalie.

Welcome to the boards Keleum! You picked one of the most fascinating areas of work coinage in my opinion, with some of the most beautiful designs ever struck. I started my journey into german talers with the 1801 - present Krause guide from a few years back. Once I realized I was hooked, I bought the 1701-1800 version, and finally the 1601-1700 version.
  • So I'm finding out. Before I was shown this road, I bought a few modern silvers from the austrian mint, just because of the exquisite designs.
