A new bust half for my 7070 set, what do you think of her?

coinbufcoinbuf Posts: 11,763 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought this on the bay last night. So first the bad, yep shes as white as a ghost alright. And that scratch on the obv field is a bit distracting too. But then again I could not really see finding such a well struck example for $125image All-in-all if she does'nt have massive hairlines that do not show in the sellers pics then this is the kind of coin that IMO is perfect AU/XF album material. Heck after 20+ yrs in the album she may tone back quite nicely. Well thats my thoughts, what are yours? this is the sellers pic.

What's up with STATES? The whole coin is really well struck except for that area. I personally would have waited a while for a little lower grade with more originality. If intended for a lont-time album coin, this may be a really nice pickup for you though!

I was thinking the die may have been either tilted or bent when striking, but other than that it's a great looking coin.

I'll try and be as nice as I can with my non-happy talk. If I thought the scratches in the field happened during circulation, (and I don't) and were toned in to go with the times (and they're not) then, they wouldn't bother me, but they doimage. I don't know what the going rate is in this condition, but it would really need to be discounted to be a good buy. It looks like you bought a throughly cleaned and scratched Bust half. I would be surprised if it's not full of hairlines. Hey, I tried to be nice.image

the positive: lots of detail on the coin.
the negative: bright, cleaned, scratched, completely unoriginal, likely hairlined.

I would not want it for an XF-AU type set. For less than $300 you should be able to find a coin that totally blows this one away.

I can only wish that were true, most are weakly struck or with unsightly (imo) toining. This is the best I've seen in several months of looking.

image Well I did ask did'nt I. All that you said is true but again for $125 this is the most detailed example I've ever found; again at this price level. There are lots of $500+ coins that would be much nicer but that is out of my budget for this coin.

It sounds like it's a coin for you then, and that's the way it should be..... enjoy.

Thanks, its too bad I was'nt looking for one several yrs ago, it seems that the prices for bust halfs in general have really taken off, someday I may be able to afford a nice more original looking one. Then again mabey after I set this album on the window ledge for a few years this one may look much more original.image

    That's what I like.

Coinbuf, thank you for asking the tough question and accepting the answers. I know it may not be the best coin, but if it's what you like, I commend you for filling that slot.

I especially can appreciate Barndog and Stman's comments. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it really does help a lot of collectors when people like you post a very straitforward question and can handle the answers that come forth.

I wish I could spare the time to post over at NGC, too. I know I'm missing a lot of great numismatists and collectors from across the street, too. (fortunately some post here, still)

Yep I saw that one also but that is exactly the coin I do not want. Yes it looks original in the pics(although I have bought one thing from this seller before it was promptly returned), but I see zero luster. To me his looks more dead than this one, but that is more personal opinion. Also check out the rev, see how the entire rim is merged into the field, very typical of the weak strikes for this date from what I've seen. And if that's not enough that rev stain is easily worse; again imo; than the scratch on the obv of mine. Not to memtion he wants more than I paid for this one. As I said this example is'nt without its worts bue still better than I've seen.

I don't think you got a bad deal, but it's way too white for my tastes. I'm too attracted to dirt and patina... image

In my opinion that is a compromise coin and is not a compromise that I would make. This coin will most likely not tone over nicely in an album and I don't think you would want to have a coin in your album where you hope it might be attractive in twenty years. A little patience and some luck goes a long way with these coins. In late June on ebay I purchased a completely original and attractive EF 1838 for $154, so it can be done.

Here's a link to the seller's images, but the coin was actually an 1839 and not an 1838 as I had previously written. D'OH!

    You paid $125?

I think you did well, if so. Nice coin. Dipped, yeah, but it's a great album coin.

(Edit: I didn't notice the obverse scratch in the right field the first time I looked. I guess I was thinking it was on the flip or holder. Since it is apparently on the coin, I amend my opinion downwards a little, but I still think it is a good coin for an album.)

It took me months and months to find a nice (VG/F) RE Bust Half for my set. Glad you found one!

Not crazy about the RE in isolation, but Let's see how it looks with the rest of the halves.
