    Good ones, especially Thurman.

Thurman for some reason (same year I guess) reminded me of how good Sam Horn was going to be for the Red Sox.

He had the most hits in an entire decade (90s) over players such as Tony Gwynn. I'd say he was hyped properly.

    Ruben Rivera

    Karim Garcia
    Travis
  • how was Cecil Fielder overhyped? He languised for years, finally got a shot, became a fan favorite, hit 50 dingers (pre-steroids)

And Danny tartabull had a pretty decent career too.
  • lotta yankees on that list :0) the new york hype sure helped sell the cards though. $$$

Oh yeah I hoarded up those Pete and Re-Pete cards. His RC at 10 years old image
  • Drew Henson was overhyped in two sports. He at least deserves an honorable mention.

I'd say Mark Grace would be a good start to the top 25 underhyped players. He was definetly the best player of the 90s no one ever talked about.

    Paul O'Neill.

What a ridiculous "Paul going to the Hall?" thread months ago image

Is 1990 Barry Bonds an actual level of measurement for prospects now? Skinpinch used it 4 times to discuss Corey Patterson.

I'm not sure that I think that Paul O'Neil was overhyped, he had a solid career with some clutch stuff with the Yanks. He's nowhere near Hall of Fame material, but that's my opinion. I added Karim Garcia as an honorable mention....but, I would never add Mark Grace because he was a very solid player. Plus, he didn't have the hype that even Mackey Sasser had back then. Walt Weiss was the 'overhyped' player of the moment when the '88 Fleer cards came out. Jose Lind, Mackey Sasser, Lance Johnson, etc had some hype around them too during that timeframe.

During the mid to late '80s anyone on a rated rookie card or fleer prospects (dual cards at the end of the set) were subject to speculation and caused a lot of hype just because everyone wanted to get that 'big hit' and make some dough by buying large lots and hoarding those cards in hopes of cashing in.

Anyone else that we can finish out the TOP 25 with?

Not sure anybody has mentioned Jose Offerman yet? He was a MAJOR Dodger's prospect, hit a home run in his first at bat and never did much in the bigs.

Others over hyped, at least in LA, EVERY 1st base prospect after Garvey who will "be the next Garvey": Brock, Marshall, Stubbs, et al.

Same era as many of the others....former Phillie great Ricky Jordan

Paul O'Neil was a very solid player for both the Reds & Yankees. He was certainly not overhyped nor dissapointing. The one who was an absolute do-nothing after extreme hype was Sidd Finch.

I don't think that I've ever heard of Sidd Finch. I agree with Ricky Jordan, he was hyped.

Living in Southern California, I remember the hype around Franklin Stubbs and those rookie cards hitting double figures at some Anaheim shows. Come to think about it....Mark McClemore and Devon White were rather hyped in early to mid '87 along with the aforementioned Kelly Gruber.

  • I remember Ben McDonald...his 90 topps was $1.25 at the time, and I was like, whoa!!! I was 10 at the time though...
I also remember Wally Joyner cards were valuable...but it didn't last long.
The Brien Taylor autograph card was a must have too, I remember.
Those are the 3 I think of.

Steve Chilcott - correct my memory if it's wrong - but wasn't he the guy the Mets drafted just before the A's drafted Reggie Jackson?

Kevin Mitchell from the Giants was sought after for a bit
  • The recent Ricky Jordan comment makes me think of Marlon Byrd (prev of the Phils now with TX?). There was a fantasy mag a few years ago with him on the cover about being the next 30-30 guy.

    Maybe its just me.

Cory Snyder and Oddibie McDowell come to mind too. IN 85, it was those 2 guys off the USA Team cards in the 85 Topps set you MUST have....

  • Didn't Ankiel get called up as an outfielder? Thought they said he hit 32 homers at AAA?

Van Poppel was single-handedly responsible for the A's change in drafting strategy. I don't believe they ever drafted a high school kid again after that disaster. So maybe you can credit Todd with launching the Moneyball era!
  • Actually the A's drafted some high school kid named Jeremy Bonderman a few years ago. As soon as they changed management they dumped him at the first opportunity. I wonder what ever happened with to that guy?
